FAT TACO TEQUILA BAR | Hoboken — Restaurant in Hoboken

As I am reading other 1 and 2 star reviews I find it very similar to my experience. I was hopping it was just an off night for myself or for the place but these low star reviews are justifying that it wasn’t just an off night. My husband and I were sat very quickly by the hostess whom was very pleasant. She said we have to order everything via the app. Personally, I am not a fan of this new technology era . I prefer to interact with a human being if I’m going to pay for service as well as an overpriced meal. However I choose to overlook that and not judge. We placed the meal, 10 minutes later and still not a single soul came to our table or brought us water. I eventually went inside to the bar and asked for water. Bartender was very accommodating and friendly! By the time I came back to the table, someone finally brought us water and utensils. We order a bunch of “shared plates” and one by one they placed it at our table. By far the quickest I ever seen food come out of the kitchen. In fact our drinks weren’t even on the table But our food was. Again, no judgment and we just carried on. My husband said that can’t be a good sign and how can food be prepared and cooked that quickly but I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they were just quick in the kitchen. However it wasn’t until we bit into our food. It was horrible! We are not one to complain. But the cost they were charging and how bad and unflavored and oily and dry was not doing it for us. As I sipped into my margarita in hopes to wash some of the food down( yes it finally arrived after the food) I thought I was just drinking pure mixer. Once we brought our concerns to what we think was the waitress It was then mentioned that the margaritas are all premade. Which explained the heavy mixer. They also charged us 2.00 for salsa for our nachos which was never mentioned. We were gracious enough for the manager to take off the nachos and drink (which were entirely not edible/drinkable). He asked for our feedback which was a first for us for a manager to care that much. However, at the end of the evening we agreed it’s a great spot for the younger crowd but the 30’s and up crowd would not be satisfied. Went here with a group of people for dinner and had a pretty negative experience. When booking the reservation, we weren’t informed large parties are required to order off a 3 course fixed menu that has a fixed price. Ultimately we were told this after we sat down and the fixed menu ended up having an extremely limited number of options (less than 4 appetizer and entree selections), each of which had super small portion sizes. When we went to order, the one appetizer that most of us ordered ended up not even being available either so we had to reorder and pick another option off the small menu. Most people just wanted a taco bowl or other meals on the normal menu we looked up prior to going and couldn’t order any of it for whatever reason.

One of the main reasons we chose to go here was because their promotion on Instagram saying “book your dinner reservations now & stay for $1 beers starting at 9”. They (also) failed to mention when booking the reservation you cannot order the beers while sitting at a table and only can order at the bar after finishing your meal. I guess this makes sense so the server gets more tips since you’re forced to order the more expensive drinks at the table but was disappointed this also wasn’t mentioned up front.

Worst part about the experience is that after getting the check, we (like a bunch of dummies) incorrectly tipped an excess 20% after not realizing a 20% gratuity was already included. Totally our mistake but the person that booked the reservation reached out to the restaurant and explained we tipped twice accidentally and basically got told their sh** out of luck. Maybe this is a nice place to go for late night drinks (we got comped 1 or 2 margaritas for all the miscommunications that ended up being pretty good for what it’s worth), but I definitely wouldn’t recommend Fat Taco if you’re just wanting to go somewhere and sit, get dinner, and talk with some friends at night on the weekend. It was my first time ever trying a birria taco and I’m happy I tried it here. This place was delicious. I am SUPER picky when it comes to food. I like my meat/chicken cut and cooked a certain way to say the least. I tasted the birria taco, chicken birria taco, chicken flautas and the bang bang cauliflower . Everything tasted amazing but the chicken birria tacos and bang bang cauliflower were ON POINT. Bang bang cauliflower is a must try! I dipped it in the birria sauce. Whoever the cooks are in the back give them a raise! My mom who critiques everything even said it was delicious. She ordered the birria tacos but said next time she’ll order the chicken birria (both were great but she prefers the chicken). The chicken birria is made from chicken breast and the birria sauce I can talk about for days with how delicious it was. The margarita flights were good too. I recommend the passion fruit margarita. They are not cheap with how much alcohol they put in their drinks. 1 drink was enough for me. I went on a Saturday night and the DJ was really good. He played a mix everyone can enjoy. The staff was extremely attentive. One thing I noticed was the young bus boys- they were on point with how frequently they came around to clear the table. They definitely didn’t just stand around. It was very noticeable that whoever hired and trained the staff really took the time to make sure they were proactive, attentive and respectful. The staff here is always doing something never just sitting around. The hostess (tiny pretty girl with light eyes and her septum pierced) was always smiling and made sure to say bye and to get home safe to everyone who left. She was very sweet and welcoming.
