I moved into the heavily Dutch-influenced community Holland over the summer and kept thinking to myself 'I gotta go to this local Dutch-style restaurant chain,' mostly because I prefer to support local business whenever possible. After having two entrees at this place I must say that for the most part their all-American food is, as the Dutch's Belgian neighbors would say, "le garbáge." To their credit, Russ' did make some nice stuff: I found their homemade applesauce quite delightful. But the rest reminded me of my fare from middle school: bland and recently cooked from frozen in an industrial microwave. I have had a burger, which I found aggressively dull; tasty sweet potato fries and typical fries, both too-closely reminding me of the frozen fries I've bought before at Meijer; and their inexplicably most popular meal, Golden Brown Fried Chicken, was downright disturbingly disappointing (how do you get fried chicken wrong? It's un-American!). I'm contemplating going to a different Russ' location in town to see if the travesty is just this particular location, but I can't imagine it'd be much different, since they're all supplied from the same sources and likely cook with the same models of microwaves. As to service, I have only been in the phone-service side of the restaurant, so I've had little interaction with staff. But the people I have interacted with all seemed friendly, so on behalf of them and the tasty homemade applesauce, I give...
Read moreOut on a little day, get-away stopped here to grab brunch. Was disappointed that breakfast was not offered. Even more disappointed when our appetizers came and the mushrooms and chicken strips were still cold in the middle. Once our meals came, they were still mediocre at best. The Ruben sandwich was made with cheap lunch meat. The Russ burger was tiny. The hamburger pattie didn't even fit the bun. The grilled chicken sandwich was still cold in the middle. The only thing that was warm and actually halfway decent was the 3pc chicken dinner. The coleslaw was pretty good. The mashed potatoes were cold instant potatoes. The dining room floors were dirty along with the men's bathroom. The elevator music in the bathrooms can definitely go! On the plus side, the waitress was exceptional, our cups were never empty, and she checked on us often. Stellar service, less...
Read moreWe came here because we were told they had "good dutch style food" and the place we were going to had closed. I also saw that they had sausage rolls (pigs in a blanket) on the menu.
On sitting down I asked the waitress "what dutch dishes do you have on the menu". This IS Holland Michigan and they DO have dutch decor on the walls. She seemed confused and then suggested 2 burgers that had "dutch" in the name.
The food is mediocre American frozen-fried. Think of a Dennys that's hadn't had a refit since the 1980's.
I got the BLT, because they were "out" of the club. Zero flavor, and very little bacon.
And the pigs in a blanket? Only available on the breakfast menu. What I know, but the waitress didn't think to tell me, is that you can buy them frozen to go...but they aren't made here, so it's cheaper to buy elsewhere.
Would...
