We went here for pizza - we like thin crust and this looked thin in pictures, and the campground where we were staying, recommended this place. I was not expecting the "old-school" tavern, but it was nice in that it was away from the crazy hub-bub of the rest of downtown. They serve mostly beer and easy mixed drinks as well as N/A offerings. Our waitress was nice and quick, and thankfully recommended the large pizza (15 inches) for my daughter and me. Yes, we ate the whole thing - in part because it was so good and in part because it is so thin it is not as substantial a pizza as you might get elsewhere. However, that's how I like it! Thin and crunchy because we asked for it well done. To my delight you can chose to have just the bottom or just the top or both well done. She said they have a button for each! Love it! The only drawback to me was that there was not much for sauce and what was there was not very flavorful. Still good, but could be better. The food menu and pizza options are traditional and small. Good, solid bar midwestern bar pizza. It's obviously very popular given the number of people coming in to eat as well as to...
Read moreOur experience must have been abnormal, but here it goes:
I came into the restaurant and didn’t know if I should seat myself or wait. I waited for a while (couple minutes), and then sat myself after seeing the server serving others but paying no attention by the door. Once I sat down, I continued to wait probably another five minutes and then the server arrived. (FYI - there were plenty of open tables. While there were people there, it wasn’t a rush hour of any kind.)
First thing the waitress told me was that outside drinks weren’t allowed (I had my WATER bottle). She also asked if I wanted anything to drink. I said that I didn’t see a drink menu, and she said they have a lot of stuff. I said I wasn’t sure and she proceeded to say they had a bar and she asked what I usually get. I personally wanted to see options, but I then just decided to order water.
After all my group arrived (6 total), we sat for probably another ten minutes. No one came to our table at all.
We decided to leave a tip and leave the restaurant. We went elsewhere downtown and were treated with great...
Read moreSkiles Tavern is the kind of neighborhood bar that gets it right by keeping it simple. It is not trying to be trendy, it is trying to be good, and that is exactly what it is. The walls hold a little history, the regulars know where their seats are, and the menu proves you do not need to reinvent the wheel when the wheel is already rolling.
The pizza here is thin crust, crisp and honest. It is the kind of pizza that disappears slice by slice before you even realize you are full. The toppings are generous without being heavy, and the balance makes you want to order another round just to keep the evening moving.
Pair that with a rotating lineup of craft brews and you understand why people keep coming back. The beer list leans thoughtful, local when it can be, and always drinkable.
Skiles Tavern does not shout. It does not have to. It just serves great pizza and good beer in a space that feels like home. And that combination is harder to find than you...
