We had this after hour craze to find out which late night coffee shop is the best. We stopped by Black Hole Coffee as we were in the neighborhood for some after meal delight. First of all, if you don't know the area well, the street Graustark St. is a very small street off of Richmond, you may missed it while driving at night. If you do miss it, you'll need to U-turn at Montrose and try again. Yes, that did happen to me because I have an eye sight of a 75 years old grandpa while driving at night.
The parking is a hit or miss, you can always try your luck on finding a spot on the private lot or simply park on the street. Be sure to read any signs that's posted as there's a time limit on where and when you can park. The shop has a wide variety of seating and a lot of plug outlets for the laptop users. There's also free WiFi but I did not use this service as I was there for a nice drink and chatting with friends. The menu on the wall have all their coffees listed. As for the beer and wine, you'll have to ask to server or simply look behind in the fridge to see what kind of beer they have.
I see that they have a good variety of microbrews and some mainstream beers, I helped myself to an unknown beer (to me at least) and the server made sure I know the price tag on it is $7. My companions ordered coffee and lemon creme pie. My beer was pretty good and the lemon crème pie was nice and fluffy. I did not drink any coffees there so I cannot comment on how good is their coffee. There's a mix of crowds but majority of the customers are definitely student bodies. The restroom is unisex restroom so gentlemen, be sure to aim straight, bring the lid back down, and keep it clean as the next person may be a girl you like but she find out that you have bad aim and didn't bring the lid down.
Overall it's a great hang out place if you don't want to be at the overcrowded Starbucks at Galleria or use free Internet because you can't...
Read moreLet me prefence this review with: one of my goals is to visit all, if not most, of the coffee shops in the greater Houston area. I was delighted at the thought of checking out black hole coffee with my girlfriend and her friend. Typically I try to get a specialty drink then return another time for a more basic latte/drip to getter a better assessment of the spectrum of their coffee. I'm very easy to please and enjoy giving positive reviews especially since many people post negative ones but I can honestly say I was a little disappointed with my visit. Not because my order was accidentally taken by another customer and I received his latte on accident (the barista did offer to remake my original requested drink and took the right steps to reconcile the situation) but because the two staff members were generally standoffish. They weren't rude but they didn't acknowledge my party and I as we entered or even as we made it to the counter, I initiated all platforms of conversation; they were indifferent to my questions about what they thought was their best option or most popular an easy way to really show me their interest or their store uniqueness. I'll return for another visit but good hospitality is the hallmark of a good coffee establishment. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day but I hope this brings a level of awareness regarding the services provided. As for the coffee: the basic latte I received was great and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Great temperature, a nice hearty underscore of coffee flavor but with a smooth balance of milk. I definitely recommend the place but I can't honestly give better than 3 stars due to...
Read moreGood food, bad experience. I'm trying out local coffee shops as a student and a coffee fanatic.
The Good: The Black Hole has it's own parking lot and nearby neighborhoods to park at, which is very nice for accessible. From the images, I was under the impression that there was a kitchen here, but sadly they were only pre-made options. Consider that, the black forest ham sandwich I had was pretty good. As for my drink, I had an iced vanilla latte, recommended from the staff and enjoyed that it was not overly sweet with a settle espresso flavor at the end.
The Bad: Now, my experience was a bit different than the food. The staff weren't rude, presay but it felt as it I was bothering them with my questions with the menu and place. I could never connect to the wifi, both on my laptop and phone. I didn't want to bring up this dilemma up with the staff, because it was difficult enough to obtain the wifi password. I don't want to say they were rude, but maybe it was a bad day they were having. This place is generally business around the clock, leaving no available sits inside. However, they have a nice outdoor area.
Overall a good drink and a nice place to chat, but willn't return to study or...
