Golden Dumpling House — Restaurant in Houston

I am usually extremely supportive of the local restaurants in chinatown, but after my experience today I felt compelled to write a review. I'll start off by saying the food and prices are really good, and this negative review is purely based off the customer service. What makes golden dumpling house so frustrating you never know if the doors are going to be open when you drive there or what they'll have. I've visited this restaurant a total of 7 times, and have unfortunately only gotten food 2 times. There have been 3 occasions when I drove up to the store during normal business hours only to see a handwritten sign that the restaurant is closed for 1 or 2 weeks. The other 2 occasions i have walked into the store only to find the items i want are sold out. Today I happened to be in chinatown doing some shopping at Jusgo and wanted to visit this restaurant for a particular item to take home. Based of my past experiences I decided to call the restaurant before driving over, and the man who answered the phone confirmed they have the item at the restaurant. I get to the restaurant literally 2 minutes later to purchase 40 dollars worth of the item and the same man who answered the phone said they are sold out and only have the more expensive options available. I have a feeling that they were already out of the item and the guy was just trying to get me in store to buy some more expensive items. Once again, I am extremely supportive of the local restaurants in chinatown, but I can no longer support this business. 4.5 star food + 0 star service =...

It was ok. My buddy and I went here for dinner and I was pleased that this place was very clean. I was most impressed with the state of their restrooms... so impressed I almost forgot I was in china town. So, you order at the counter. There are no pictures on the menu. There is a self service bar for you to get your condiments and drinks. We ordered beef noodle soup, and order of steamed dumplings with pork and vegetables and fried dumpling with pork and vegetables. It was... ok. Here's the skinny:

The beef noodle soup was pretty legit, but dang were there a LOT of noodles. I definitely did not have enough soup for them noodles. If you're looking for quantity though, you will be satisfied. The beef was tender and overall a very strong dishes. Based on other reviews, I see many agree with me. You The dumplings. We ordered both fried and steamed dumplings, but the texture was like... the same. What the heck? I think it's bc there was way to much skin or something. You eat one and youre kinda full but definitely not satisfied. Perhaps as a Taiwanese American, my asian cuisine standards are high. These dumplings... not special. Sorry. But not sorry. In this area I was disappointed especially when you're eating dumplings from golden DUMPLING house. However, the flavors are there.

Price was very agreeable. We paid 18$ for all that food and had ample left overs. It's cash only. You pay at the counter. Service- average for china town. They take your order then...

SCALLION PANKCAKE 💛💛💛 Ex brought me here 16yrs ago and I loved it! I didnt frequent often because it used to be cash only for the longest, and I only ever carried credit card. But I never forgot that scallion pancake 🤤 That's the hottest item I'll brag to anyone about 😍 As a Hispanic, currently I only know buñuelos as crispy and sweet. But these are like SAVORY buñuelos. They're soft and only lightly crispy like the bubbles on a handmade toasted flour tortilla. The fresh hotness, flavor and texture always leave me jonesing for more. I would definitely vouch for this item, because it's like the craving for my grandma's homemade flour tortillas. I could just keep eating them and eating them by themselves.

Even if you dont enjoy the rest of their food, I highly reccomend the Scallion Pancake, and take it as a snack.

I forget which dumplings we ordered but my roommate and I enjoyed them. They're pretty huge compared to others we've tried and probably cheaper than buying frozen from the grocery stores. There will definitely be a next time where we look forward to trying more od the menu, and we intend to buy 40 frozen dumplings to take home.
