We were really excited to have Herand’s restaurant in the area and stopped by to support local business for lunch. Business seems to be fairly new and they are working to improve. Good taste and value of the dishes were decent. Flavors were there but it didn’t pack the punch that we are used to. We tried the chicken on the bone and expected better bone in pieces like chicken thighs or drumsticks but it was a few pieces of chicken wings. A little disappointed in that, it made us feel like we paid a lot for wings over rice. The flavor, however, was really savory and good so it kinda made up for it. Additionally, we tried the beef chenjeh which is grilled beef chunks. It was flavorful but i would like to try the kafta next time. Veggies were grilled well but you have to peel off the black char on the tomatoes and jalepeno. Rice was not as fluffy and hot when it came out. We asked for butter but since the rice wasn’t warm, the butter didn’t melt. Rice was not seasoned so we were hoping the butter would help. We didn’t finish the rice, surprisingly.
The restaurant didn’t have spoons or plating for children. We had to ask a few times for things they needed to eat with. I guess I’m used to having those things offered at restaurants. I’ll just make a note to bring my own next time. This is possibly a suggestion for their team to offer these things since the neighborhood has a lot of families with young ones. We kindly asked them to set aside their beautiful plates and glassware so our kids wouldn’t potentially break it.
Service was good but seemed like it was a small staff. It was fine with us being the only ones there but as more customers came in, I could see how service may be an issue.
I am hoping they improve, and it looks like they are working on it. Wishing the owner good luck...
Read moreI stumbled upon Herand’s Kitchen while exploring my neighborhood, and it quickly became a favorite. This hidden gem in East Sunset Heights has a rich story behind it. After decades of dreaming and saving, Herand Tahmasian opened his first Persian-Mediterranean restaurant in California in 2021. In 2024, he relocated to Houston to be closer to his family and reopened his restaurant in the Heights by the end of the year.
Herand’s journey is as flavorful as his food. Born in Iran to Armenian parents, married to a Greek wife, and having raised a family in London, his cooking reflects a beautiful blend of cultures. His warm personality makes the experience even better—he’s a friendly, happy man with a jokester’s charm. You can feel his passion not just in the food, but in how he interacts with every guest.
The restaurant is tucked in a quiet residential area, with a private parking lot and plenty of street parking. Inside, it’s spacious, spotless, and modern, with sleek black-and-white decor. The open kitchen lets you watch Herand cooking each dish with care, making the atmosphere feel both lively and inviting.
