I ordered foods through Doordash. I really loved how fresh and flavorful the foods are. I did not plan it but I finished them all at once. You would not be disappointed.. I am a real foodie.
Update- I ordered foods two days in a row. I immediately missed the sushi after finishing it and I wanted to try the rest of the menus. Today was more basic stuffs but absolutely delicious!
3rd time order Seriously amazing. Period.
4th time order Made my day. I love how thick all the fish pieces are! Very fresh and flavorful!!
5th time order I just couldn’t resist!
6th time order I cannot believe what the chef did to his food! It’s magically delicious!!!!!! I also love the new packaging
7th time order Couldn’t resist Uni coming into menu! It was absolutely fresh, sweet and creamy! I hope I can afford 10 pieces and some champagne! Also, the Sashimi bowl was a real gem! The rice was perfectly marinated. The harmony of fresh fish and full of green vegetables brought spring in my mouth. Also a very good value. Chef Sunny made my day!
Meant to save steak bowl for tomorrow but I ended up having it all 7.18 Order - Lunch Bento and Softshell Crab roll. I seldomly leave a lengthy review but I should write a long one today because I am REALLY IMPRESSED. Kaisen bento box was a very good deal, with balanced menu and the taste. I loved how many sashimi pieces were included. Also, The combination of the Californian roll and the Inari sushi were amazing. It shows the identity of Kaisen, so for anyone who hasn't tried Sunny's food yet, please start with this bento box, and you will get a great preview. Also, I am usually not a big fan of fried foods, so I was hesitant to try the soft shell crab roll. But I trusted him so tried it. And it was more than I expected. It has huge fried crab in it which is very tasteful, but as it has a lot of greens with it, it still tastes fresh and light. If you want to go heavier, then go with sriracha ailoli, if you want to keep the fresh vibe, then go with nikiri sauce. Sunny, you really are an artist, and thank you for making my day.
8.7 I tried the new menu, Hotate rolls. I was shocked how flavorful and balanced the taste and the texture are. This is the roll that you would expect from a very high end restaurant which not only serves seafood, but as one of its courses. I loved the crunchiness of cucumber, and jalapeño for its crunchiness and the spicy kick. The siso leaf was very fragrant. The avocado adds up the softness of the scallop. I absolutely love this roll. Also, I don’t know what the fish is, but the one with fermented soy sauce on, it was crazy delicious. I also love the salmon, as I always do, and the real wasabi and the lean tuna are very balanced.
You guys I am serious. You should try bluefin Tuna. It is extremely fresh...
Read moreI’d been craving sushi ALLL week after seeing so many TikToks about how amazing Kaisen Sushi is and was impressed by Chef Sunny’s honesty and transparency about his struggles as a new small business owner. I thought what better way to support his craft and take advantage of the great promotion he’s running? I drove an hour into town from Richmond to pick up my order. The area around the food hall isn’t the nicest, so I then drove about ten minutes over to West U to eat, and that drive felt so long because I was so excited to just open the bag and dig in right there in the car.
I went with the Omakase Set A since that’s what everyone online seemed to get, but I wish I’d gone with individual orders of nigiri instead. The omakase came with 8 pieces of California roll, 2 inari, 2 scallop sashimi, 1 salmon, 1 squid (I think?), and 2 white fish pieces (possibly amberjack and another type) that were honestly a bit fishy. I also thought the inari would have masago in it like the pictures I’d seen, but I guess not. I was surprised there wasn’t any tuna either, especially since Chef Sunny mentioned having a lot left over and just receiving a new shipment, but that’s how omakase works..
I also tried the spicy scallop hand roll because the menu description made it sound like “the next hottest thing,” but it was pretty standard—just chopped scallops with a sprinkle of shichimi togarashi and not much else.
That said, the overall quality of the fish (besides the white fish) was good, and I really appreciate their attention to detail. The insulated bag, clean presentation, and homemade dashi broth show how much care they put into everything. I think I was just expecting something a bit more out of the ordinary—something phenomenal or a real flavor bomb like Norigami’s handrolls. Or maybe it’s me as I haven’t been very impressed with Uchi my last few times either. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but this one didn’t quite hit the...
Read moreI’ve been following their Instagram for a while in anticipation of their launch as the sushi looked great in the photos.
They’re located in the Blogdett food hall operating as a ghost kitchen and I placed my order in person at the kiosk on site. So, you can ignore the “atmosphere” rating as the food hall is setup for pickup.
My order took a bit longer than the original estimate on the kiosk displayed while ordering, but when it was ready, Chef Sunny thanked me for being patient and unprompted included a few tasty extras. Frankly, the wait didn’t bother me as I had nowhere to be and given that it’s their second night in business and they’re still getting their sea legs.
While I just have a short 10 minute drive home, others of whom are ordering delivery via Uber Eats or Doordash and have a longer wait time will be glad to know the packaging is solid. A cold pack is on the bottom and an insulation panel on top to keep the temperature cooler. Also the soy sauce comes in a mini squeeze container rather than generic packets.
First order was the fatty salmon and a California roll. The quality of the fish was fresh, solid and I think fairly priced. The Cali roll was giant and tasted better than the average generic Cali roll.
I’ll be back again to try other items on the menu. It’ll be interesting to see how they expand it, but they seem to be nailing the basics and doing it at an elevated level.
Now, I didn’t check what the price would’ve been had I ordered delivery or pickup thru Uber Eats or DoorDash. I think adding delivery fees to any food order diminishes the value proposition for most restaurants. But I would suggest picking up in person if you’re local to the area (say within a 15 minute drive). For the price, you’d be hard pressed to find similar or better takeout...
