I went to Thai Tapas in the Heights on a Saturday evening with my wife and our 20-month-old toddler. We didn't have a reservation, but we were still able to get a table right away. They had high chairs available and service was friendly and prompt. We were seated and able to order quickly. Parking is free for two hours in the shared lot with neighboring businesses in the strip mall.
According to their website, Thai Tapas combines the bold, vibrant flavors of Thailand with the artistry of Japanese cuisine, focusing on small plates, shareable dishes, and a full bar. The menu covers everything from Thai street food to premium sushi and sashimi.
[KID'S MENU]
+Kid Flat Noodle for $10.99 - Stir-fried flat rice noodles with chicken, egg, carrots, and broccoli in a kid-friendly savory sauce. It came out not too hot, which was great for feeding a toddler. Not spicy, flavorful enough, and my son ate it with no issue. Very greasy and messy though, so bring wipes if ordering this. - 4/5
[COCKTAILS]
+Smoky Old Fashioned for $15 - Just okay. A little harsh and not smooth. - 2.5/5
[APPETIZERS]
+Siam Sear Sake (Salmon) for $14.99 - Premium Scottish salmon, lightly torched with Thai chili ponzu. The flavor was fine, but the salmon wasn't as melty as I'd hoped. Wouldn't order again. - 3/5
[SALAD]
+Siam Papaya Salad for $12.99 - Shredded green papaya and carrot with tomato, garlic, and green beans in traditional Thai dressing. A solid version. - 4/5
[FRIED RICE DISHES]
+Crab Fried Rice for $19.99 - Jasmine rice stir-fried with crab claw meat, egg, garlic, and onion, topped with lump crab and white pepper. Decent, but not standout. - 3.5/5
[STIR-FRIED DISHES]
+Pepper Garlic (Pad Kra Tiem) for $13.99 - Wok-seared chicken with garlic, black pepper, and light brown sauce over carrots and broccoli. This was cold and disappointing. I would avoid their stir-fried dishes. - 2/5
[DESSERTS]
+Mango & Sweet Sticky Rice for $9.99 - Mango with sticky rice, coconut drizzle, and mung beans. Portion was small, not good, and they mistakenly brought it first, then left it sitting until the end. Definitely skip. - 2/5
Overall, Thai Tapas is new and has potential, but the food feels inconsistent and needs work. Service was good, the atmosphere is fine, but I wouldn't see...
Read moreWow...so not worth the trip! While the flavor profiles were there they're not exceptional to justify the price in any way!!!!! They used to be part of the Thai Spice family which was exceptional and not sure what happened that this location is now called Thai Tapas and I guess they kept the same cooks because the flavors are similar but the portions.....stingy stingy stingy. I ordered my standard favorite of peanut chicken and had to pay full entree price because the new owners do not offer lunch specials and the portion they gave me was horrible...it was the smallest portion I've EVER encountered on an entree dish...Thai Spices lunch portion was double in size compared to this and then I got a large Hot and Sour soup and the description on the menu made it seem like it was some awesome dish and was only offered in one size at 8.99 on the menu...the guy charged me 15.99 for a pint size of standard sweet and sour soup!!! That's all it was just plain Ole regular hot and sour soup that has NEVER been 16 bucks ANYWHERE so not sure who these people think they are catering too but yeah...this is a scam!! I would NEVER eat there again and so sorry Thai Spice vacated the premises because you were reasonable and worth EVERY PENNY!!! And their servers were exceptional this place....not so much!!! Proceed with caution my friends. Wish I could show pics of my flimsy kids portion at full price. I paid $45 bucks for a kids meal and a side of standard soup!! Yep! I got suckered!!!!! Two thumbs down for Thai Tapas....PU people u should be...
Read moreWas excited to try this restaurant based on the glowing reviews and fanfare on social media, but I wish that I did not fall prey to the false advertisement.
Went with my mother towards the end of happy hour. Restaurant was mostly empty, and yet service was pretty much nonexistent (e.g., we're having to call the waitstaff over to place orders, no one checked on whether we were pleased with our order or even if we wanted to order more, asked for boxes that never arrived, etc.). We ordered two cocktails and two entrees... Cocktails were pretty standard; food was decent in flavor, but really small portions compared to comparable Thai restaurants in the area. Was not until part way through the meal that my mother realized that she was given the wrong entree as she kept expecting certain ingredients listed on the menu that never were present in the dish. Our mistake for not catching it sooner, but the restaurants mistake for the error when the there was not a huge demand on the kitchen.
My main complaint though with Thai Tapas is that they tried to overcharge us on the cocktails! As previously mentioned, we arrived during happy hour, but the check that we received was for the full price of the cocktails and not the happy hour prices. They fixed the error after I asked for the correction, but come on now Thai Tapas, how often are you charging your patrons full price during happy hour and they are not checking their checks as...
