I have been to twotone probably 5 or 6 times. I think this coffee shop is a rising star in the HTX coffee scene and I'm super excited to watch them grow!
Here's a detailed reveiw of my experience. Plz note that these are my opinions and everyone has different preferences.
Drinks: Cappuccino: phenomenal, hard to get a consistently good pull that isn't too bitter or acidic but the three times I ordered a cappuccino it was better than 90% of coffee shops in Htx. Jet Black: amazing drink, a bit on the sweeter side so you may want to order it reduced. This is my wife's go to order and a very solid latte Cafe sua da: I usually despise when people try to imitate vietnamese coffee with espresso. Normally the resulting drink is an unsatisfying abomination. Twotone has got it right though! Their Cafe sua da is the best alternative to genuine viet coffee inside the 610 loop. Otherwise I'd be driving to Le'Drip. It is the only espresso based viet coffee dupe that gets the blend of strength and sweetness right. It is not a vietnamese coffee, but it satisfies my cravings until I can get to Le'Drip. Creme Noir: imo this is their weakest drink I've tried, but that's probably just my bias. I am not usually a fan of Americanos. For what it was, it was a bit too sweet. Muay Thai: I've been wanting to try this drink since it was on the menu. It's been three weeks but I finally got it. It's a very refreshing latte, the Banana milk and Thai tea really stand out, only a hint of the espresso at the very end. This drink would be perfect ordered half sweet and on a very hot day!
Service: I've had a great time everytime I visit. The team is really nice and they never make me feel rushed. The owner (I think* this guy is the owner) is really nice as well and I love that he takes a hands on approach with helping his staff. He often helps guests find the end of the order queue and hands out the drinks. Speaking of, the line is long but the staff are fast! I've been at the back of the line when it wraps inside the cafe several times and without fail I'm to the front within 5-6min. As well, our drinks are normally ready within another 5-6min. I don't mind waiting for a good coffee but it's even better when the wait is short!
Atmosphere: this is the dodgiest part. The interior is bare bones. Don't come if the only reason is to do work inside. There is minimal and often already taken seating. This is more akin to a grab and go coffee shop, whether or not they want to be. It's a limitation of their rental space. I would love if in the future they could rent a large space with real seating!
Their hours are strange. I don't know why they have such weird hours. I don't visit them during the week because they aren't open after the work day ends and they're in the opposite direction of my commute. I understand they may be trying to maximize profit but cutting the slow hours out of their days open, and I understand that by opening on only a few days they can manufacture scarcity similar to chick-fil-a's business model. But it is inconvenient to have strange hours and days open.
No menu prices. Yep, that's not all that shocking. As a rule of thumb, if a place has no menu prices, expect a higher price than normal and hope for better quality. I would prefer if they had it, and I would be upset if they coffee was mid or bad. But that isn't the case in my veiw. Their prices are not outrageous or even expensive, it's ~$7-$8 per drink which, like it or not, is the norm these days. I find it off-putting but luckily I liked the coffee so it didn't feel like a rip off as others have mentioned.
Overall: twotone is a great spot with great coffee. A gem on the htx coffee scene and real competitor for best coffee! I am pretty picky about coffee, so it's amazing to have another coffee shop to add the rotation. I really look forward to seeing how twotone adapts and expands once they finally...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI find it somewhat ironicāand honestly a bit absurdāthat some people leave negative reviews about Twotone criticizing the speed of service or specific products (like the matcha, for example), without understanding that a high-quality matcha naturally has sediment and doesnāt dissolve completely.š
Whatās even more surprising is that many of these critics never attended the pop-ups and events that Tom and Jennie hosted for over a year before opening their own physical shop. There are people with a limited mindset who expect a new business to have everything perfectly in place right away, ignoring the reality that it takes time to get to know the audience, the location, the suppliers, and the needs of the community.
Behind Twotone is a creative vision, genuine dedication, and visible hard work by Tom, Jennie, and their wonderful team. You can clearly see it in the thoughtfulness behind their drinks, their brand, their product choices, and most importantly, in their consistent effort to improve. You can feel the heart and intention they put into everything they do.
Some people just donāt take the time to understand the story, the passion, or where a business is coming from. They only know how to criticize. Unless someone is willing to show a bit of empathy, itās hard for them to appreciate that when a space is packed and thereās a long line, a drink might take 15 or 20 minutesābut the quality and hospitality stay consistent.
Comparing things like milk, syrups, or textures to those used by mass-production chains or franchises is pointlessāespecially when youāre clearly in a completely different kind of space with thoughtfully curated ingredients.
Leaving a bad review because you showed up two hours past closing time is, frankly, immature, irresponsible, and selfish. Thatās not a service failureāthatās a lack of awareness and courtesy from the customer. Even complaining about not having prices in the printed menu is petty, Iām pretty sure you have the voice to just ask in case you want to know.
Twotone has personality, quality, flavor, a clean and subtle brand identity, great music, a friendly and welcoming team, and absolutely delicious drinks. Itās a space I would wholeheartedly recommend, whether youāre a fan of a great espresso or creative, flavor-forward beverages.šš»āļø
Even their packaging stands out in quality. And their apparel holds up beautifully over timeāits shape and print remain intact even after many washes. This is a brand with a strong sense of identity, always evolving, creating, and pushing forward.
Congratulations to the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI heard about Two Tone from a coworker. We work close by and used to frequent Pura Vida Coffee when it was there. I had no idea a new coffee shop had opened up despite driving by every day, Monday- Friday. Let me say that the staff is friendly and the matcha is great. If you are in need of a good match, Thursday- Sunday, definitely stop by and check them out! However, being closed Monday-Wednesday, 3 days of the work week, doesnāt make sense to me. Also, you would never know it is a coffee shop or that itās open. I drive by it every day on my way to work and never noticed it. I stopped by this morning, a Wednesday, and went to open the door and it was locked. There are no hours on the door or an open/close sign. The windows are frosted so you canāt see inside. The building says Two Tone, but the word ācoffeeā is not mentioned so it could be anything from a paint store to a hair salon just looking at it. Also, there is a renovation next door and you can see all their stuff, and it kinda looks like itās part of Two Tone, so someone stopping by might think the coffee shop isnāt open for business at all. I would suggest adding business hours to the door or an open or close sign. Maybe something that indicates that itās a coffee shop. I would love for it to be open Monday- Friday, but Iām not going to tell them how their business model should run- but I def think the other items would help people know itās open/closed and a...
