I'm not vegan, but I do like trying vegan food, and have been looking forward to trying The Veggie since I first heard about them.
Located in the old home of Happy Tummy at Lowe Mill, The Veggie retains the open, airy feel and has added some bright and beautiful colors to the walls, menu, and food.
I opted to order online for pickup. Online ordering was fairly easy, though I was never able to find my way to where I could order any kind of drink. I really wanted to try their lemonade (heard great things!) but couldn't find an option for that. Maybe it's meant to be that way, maybe it's because I was ordering on my phone as opposed to a computer, or maybe I'm just a dunce. But I was able to order a lemonade at the counter when I got there to pick up my food, so at least it worked out in the end.
I was told my food would be ready at 2:30. I was working in the Mill so I showed up right on time. I had to wait a couple extra minutes but not more than 5, so I consider that pretty good. They were decently busy.
Masking is encouraged at this restaurant still, and as far as I could tell all staff were masked. I appreciate that, personally.
The staff member I interacted with was pleasant and prompt. I do agree with other reviewers that the dining space itself catches a decent bit of the smoke/scents from the kitchen. I didn't find it overwhelming and it's a product of the space they're in, but just something to be aware of if you're super sensitive to that.
I ordered the chickun basket -- fried oyster mushroom "chicken" strips with French fries and a dipping sauce of my choice (ranch, obviously). The only lemonade available was charcoal lemonade, so that's what I had to drink.
If you want vegan food that resembles "real" meat, this should scratch that itch. The bigger pieces of mushroom still had a slightly spongy mushroom texture, but I'd say about 80% of my mushroom pieces were similar enough to chicken that I didn't really miss it. The batter went a really long way -- almost exactly like really solid chicken tender batter. It was crispy and crunchy. I will note the size/shape is closer to a nugget than a strip, at least in my order. That was fine for me!
The ranch, being vegan, was (for me) missing a little thickness from the loss of buttermilk, and also a little herby for my personal preference....BUT, for vegan ranch, I liked it! I've had much worse NON-vegan ranch in my time, lol.
I liked the fries well enough, too. The lemonade didn't have any weird flavor from the charcoal (idk what charcoal lemonade is supposed to taste like normally so...yeah); it just tasted like regular, albeit quite good, lemonade! It was pretty acidic (the roof of my mouth complained later that evening, lol) and not crazy sweet, but I personally like that in lemonade.
I had two coworkers that later ordered their lunch here as well and they both seemed to enjoy their choices (another chickun basket and something that looked like a salad/greens bowl).
All in all, I'd be happy to return to try brunch or perhaps their take on a Philly -- that looks good. I'd also order my same meal again. Good job to The Veggie for providing tasty vegan food that...
Read moreEDIT: I strongly discourage EVERYONE from going to this business. After leaving a comment explaining why I would not longer be returning to this business, whoever manages their account decided to respond with blatant lies. I did not get there 20 minutes before closing (and my order receipt shows that very CLEARLY). We were never asked if we wanted our fries ahead of anything. NO ONE and I mean no one, communicated with us in that one hour and twenty minutes time span. The response made to my initial comment truly shows the character of those who run this establishment. Failing to take any accountability whatsoever and making it seem like the customer is at fault. Even the amount of food we ordered ACCORDING TO THEM, is completely wrong lol. What a disgrace.
The food at this restaurant is absolutely delicious. However, the service leaves much to be desired. I had lunch here about four times in one week because the food is genuinely that good. Wanting my family to enjoy it as well, I decided to bring my wife and our six children.
We arrived about an hour before closing, excited to have lunch together before moving on to other plans. Unfortunately, our simple meals weren’t ready until an hour and twenty minutes later. We had all ordered the exact same thing, thinking it would make things easier for the kitchen.
After waiting more than 30 minutes, I began to get concerned since we had time-sensitive plans afterward. Then I noticed one of the workers coming in through the back with bags of frozen fries, which made it seem like they were out of some of the items we ordered. Normally, that wouldn’t have bothered me—if they had just communicated it. We would have gladly chosen something else had we known that ordering fries and snack wraps would cost us an additional hour and twenty minutes on top of what we paid.
To make matters worse, when our food finally arrived, all the fries were soggy. No one explained what was going on or offered an apology for the delay. The person who handed us our food simply said, “Sorry for the wait.”
As much as I’ve enjoyed the food here in the past, this experience was very disappointing. We value our time deeply and, unfortunately, won’t be...
Read moreI just ordered from this place and the cashier got my order wrong and instead of fixing it, I just got a sorry. I ordered the chikin club with the side vegetable for $1. I asked the cashier when I was ordering what is the side vegetable, she went to the back and asked and said it was a salad, I said okay, give me that. I told her to also to give me the sweet potato fries but with no sugar on them. When I get my receipt, something looks off because it says add grilled vegetables. I pointed this out to the cashier and said I didn’t want that but the salad, she responded by saying oh the receipt just says grilled vegetables, I said okay. As I was looking at my receipt, I’m like how does this make sense but then I was like let me just get the food. When I get the food, which took a long time to get even though I was the only person in the restaurant, I realized the salad is not there. So I say to the cashier where is the salad, she then points to lettuce on the sandwich almost touching it. I told her I don’t want you to touch it, I then say, I thought the salad was an extra $1, how is this the salad. She then responded with oh it’s either the salad or the sweet potato fries, I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. When I look at my recipe and the actual sandwich, she put in an order for grilled vegetables on the sandwich which I didn’t ask for that. The grilled vegetables were an extra $2.50 and what I wanted was an extra $1. Not only did I not get what I ordered, I was charged more. When I said something, the cashier and someone else at the register was looking at the computer screen. As opposed to offering me the salad like I ordered, I was given a sorry. I will never come back here. The complete disregard for customer service when the cashier got the order WRONG and made no attempt to correct the issue. I clearly left the place disappointed and they didn’t care. I’m their target customer as a plant based eater but the poor customer service makes this place now like any other restaurant that only offers meat, I will...
