This is a perfect example of trying to fix something that wasn't broke. We were huge fans of Lulu's. It was a diamond in the rough. Great Prices great seafood and a beach atmosphere that appealed to locals and tourists alike.
The menu was great, the prices were awesome, staff was amazing, and the kitchen executed the menu to perfection. Plus they made one of the best Irish Mules I had ever had.
Why they decided to turn it into a Mexican Eatery I will never understand. However, we went in with an Open Mind and give it a try. The ordering concept where you fill out your menu card totally doesn't work. It is two sided and confusing, plus there is no kids menu. We tried an assortment of items. The burrito, empanadas, tacos, tamales, chips and queso, and Mexican corn. When you order, they give you a number and they call you up when your food is ready. It is basically self service.
The restaurant was clean and the decor was nice and the staff was friendly.
The food was bland, not seasoned properly. The tamale was soggy and very little filler. The meat in the empanada and burrito were lack luster. The queso was cold. My Daughter did not like anything. We ended up going to a local ice cream shop on the beach to get her a hot dog.
The only thing that was good was the Mexican Corn, but that could not make up for rest of the food. Our meal cost about $40.00 and that was Forty bucks that I wish I had spent elsewhere.
If they don't improve their food, this restaurant will not last. When it fails and it will, maybe. they will bring back Lululs. One can only hope!
Thank you for responding back. It shows you really care about your restaurant. A lot of us locals really miss Lulus and we really were hoping for a Similar experience at the Cantina.
That being said please have a staff meeting with respect to the food. They either need to revamp things in preparation (i.e. not executing the menu correctly) or you need to look at the menu itself. The tamales need work. They need more filling and the seasoning needs to be reworked. The same goes with the beef and other meats. The seasoning is not right. The good thing is that it appears that everything is fresh so that is a plus. Please take these constructive criticisms and the feed back from other dinners to heart so you can right the ship and keep the business headed in the right direction. I truly wish...
Read moreVery disappointed with new location. Let me just start by saying my family has enjoyed Jakes Cantina for many years. Fast service and amazing food. Sadly to say the new location has horrible service and the food is not nearly as good as it was at the old location.
We walked into the new location on Sunday just before noon to order food to go. We were the only 2 people in line at first. The young man behind the counter did not acknowledge us or says anything. After about 5 minutes of waiting and staring at him I asked him if this is where we order. He said “yes it is” then continued ignoring us. We continued to stand there for 10 more minutes staring at him and the employees behind the glass making to go orders as other people lined up behind us. Employee filling drink case and behind bar also ignored the growing line of people behind us. Now the line has over 10 people lined up and all the employees are still busy ignoring us. We were just about to walk out. Finally one of the men behind the glass making food asked if we filled out the paper order form to order our food. No one in the line had the paper order form to place order on or saw anything instructing that orders were placed that way. We were the told to insert the completed order form into the side of the glass wall in an unmarked crack. Who knew. I guess only the employees knew this.
The entire experience was ridiculous. The fact that we stood in front of this entire staff for 15 minutes and not one person pointed out the fact that we needed to fill out an order ticket. The young man behind the counter should have said to complete an order form when I asked him if this is where we order at the 5 minute point.
It took us over 20 minutes to walk in and get our food when there was no one in line in front of us. Not one employee apologized for the confusion and ignoring us for so long. After all of that the food wasn’t great. We were long time loyal Jakes customers and now we will not be going back to this new location

Read moreWe were very excited to finally try Jakes after all the hype from so many friends. Sadly, it was a let down and we will not return. By the sound of other reviewers, things have gone downhill since moving to the new location (and suspect being purchased by Crabby Bill’s)
Ordering kiosks were challenging to work your way through, particularly if building your own. (Wawa has them beat hands down). So much that the customer on the kiosk next to us spoke up and agreed with us as he heard us grumbling about the challenges.
Food took nearly 20 min to prep with only a handful of people in the place. My burrito bowl was luke warm at best. Her tacos were downright cold. The pico looked like nothing but chopped tomatoes, the flavor was so so, rice in my bowl wasn’t properly cooked with many grains crunchy (gross). I ordered both pork and chicken but only got pork which was horrible compared to typical Mexican carnitas. Chipotle’s bowls are a 10. I’d give this a 1-2. Guacamole was good. Free chips were a nice touch if they weren’t stale and we had more than 5 chips worth of salsa.
Sounds like everything is crashing at the new location and/or under new ownership. Feels like corners are being cut in the name of profit and that’s a disappointment. Seeing how virtually all reviews are being replied to, I hope these NUMEROUS poor reviews of recent make you as a company actually IMPROVE, however, months has passed with the same complaints in the reviews over and over. I don’t want a fluffy butt-kissing response, I want to see this place go back to the 4.9 star top rated place it was at the old location. To drop to 4.5 in a short period of time with a 1000+ reviews is a massive red flag and changes should be implemented to go back to the ways of the past instead of simply just writing...
