Disclaimer: I'm from Wisconsin and we take our fish fries very seriously, especially during Lent, and, for me, their fish and chips missed the mark in several ways.

They described the meal as, "FISH & CHIPS $17 Atlantic cod is sliced into strips, dipped in our house beer batter, deep fried, and served with hand cut French fries tossed in our “malt & salt” spice rub, tartar sauce, and a side of slaw.".

In general, I found the portions to be on the smaller side (which was fine because it wasn't tasty). So I should have read the description closer because they say "cod sliced into strips" and what they mean is you will get fish nuggets. The fish itself was actually sliced up cod that was battered, not ground fish parts, so that's good. I did order pick up, and I arrived on time, but the fish wasn't crisp when I got it, which is fine/expected with to-go orders. They could help make things stay crispy if they would let some of the steam release from their to-go containers (e.g, place a small hole in a corner), but I know it's a balance of crisp vs. maintaining heat. Also, while the texture was beer battered, and something wasn't quite right about it. It may be that I didn't taste the flavors I typically associate more things that are beer batter, and the coating was thin in places.

"Tarter" Sauce: They did not serve tartar sauce, instead I got a white sauce that had Parmesan cheese and maybe garlic -- which was disappointing/gross and ruined that first bite of fish. I'm sure the sauce is fine for fries, but it wasn't what I was expecting and did not go well with the fish.

Fries: The flavor of the fries were great! I really could taste the "malt". However, both the fish and the chips were really, really salty, which is unfortunate, because while I like salt, I don't want it to be the only way for the food flavor to be enhanced.

Coleslaw: It was square chopped cabbage and I could have personally used a bit more celery seed, but I suspect this catering to local tastes and generally thought it was fine.

Assessment: Honestly, I probably will never order another of their specials again, especially not fried fish or something I have expectations of. I would recommend their sticking to their BBQ.

In general, I've ordered from here a couple of times. The first several times was mostly getting family platters with a lot of BBQ and sides, and I have no complaints from the BBQ. Based on the BBQ, I would have given this a 4 or 5 out of 5. This most recent time, I ordered a fish and chips to go and that experience was a 2/5 for me. For a $17 fish fry, my...

I recently visited Half Liter Barbecue, and I must say, it was an absolute delight! From the moment I walked in until the moment I left, everything about this place exceeded my expectations.

Let's start with the star of the show—their barbecue. The flavors were simply outstanding, and I couldn't get enough of it! While the brisket was good, it didn't quite match the level of excellence found in their other offerings. However, the smoked wings were a whole different story. I can confidently say that they were the best wings I've ever had! Each bite was packed with smoky goodness and a tantalizing combination of spices. It's a must-try for anyone visiting this joint.

Apart from the incredible food, the service was top-notch. The waitresses who assisted us were absolutely fantastic. They were attentive, friendly, and made us feel right at home. Their knowledge of the menu and their genuine enthusiasm added an extra layer of enjoyment to our dining experience.

One of the highlights of Half Liter Barbecue is their roomy beer garden. It's a wonderful space where you can relax, enjoy your meal, and sip on your favorite beverage. What truly impressed me was the regular local musical talent they feature in this area. The live music created a lively and energetic atmosphere, making the whole experience even more enjoyable.

However, I must mention one small issue I encountered during my visit—the presence of builders stone in the outdoor space. It left my expensive casual sneakers with white gravel dust, which was a bit disappointing. While it didn't significantly affect my overall experience, it's something the management should address to ensure the comfort of their patrons.

Despite that minor hiccup, I wholeheartedly recommend Half Liter Barbecue to anyone seeking mouthwatering barbecue, excellent service, and a vibrant atmosphere. You won't be disappointed! I'm already looking forward to my next visit to indulge in their amazing smoked wings and soak in the fantastic local...

First off I want to say that our server Carissa was absolutely amazing! She was extremely attentive to her needs, and honestly hands-down, the saving grace to our meal.

We drove down from Noblesville to try something different. I wish I would’ve saved my money… We got a variety of things because we wanted to try a few different things and we smoked wings, Because they were out of Burnt ends, And a hot fried chicken.

For the sides, we got tater tots, Macaroni and cheese, And mashed potatoes. Originally, we had two of those replaced with cornbread and corn cake, but they were out.

When the food arrived the mashed potatoes got there five minutes before the food did. They had some flavor to them and they weren’t bad. Let’s talk about the food though..

Do not order that hot fried chicken is nothing but fried chicken! There is no seasoning on it whatsoever and no spice! I’ve tasted oatmeal that was spicier. The brisket was dry. You can tell they sliced it when they came to the table. It was not even warm. Brisket should be freshly sliced… it was very dry, and it was almost like having a dry sponge in your mouth. I noticed several other tables had brisket, and it looked exactly the same. The smoked wings were not bad. They had good flavor to them; a little dry. As somebody who barbecues himself at home, these were definitely left on too long and should’ve been kept in a steam table.

The sides tater tots were well seasoned. They were not bad. Nothing exciting about them, but it’s tater tots. macaroni and cheese was bland with no seasoning and really runny. The mashed potatoes did have some seasoning to them, and they were actually one of the better things to eat.

It is a great atmosphere Great service just the food...

Half Liter BBQ: Where Smoke Meets Scene in Broad Ripple 5301 Winthrop Ave, Indianapolis Tucked just off the Monon Trail, Half Liter BBQ is more than a pit stop—it’s a destination. On a Monday afternoon, the crowd was already swelling by 1 p.m., signaling a loyal following and strong midday appeal. The layout caters well to Indiana’s fickle weather: a sprawling outdoor patio, ample indoor seating, and large garage doors that create a seamless flow between the two. The space strikes a balance between casual comfort and controlled chaos. It’s lively, a bit loud, but never overwhelming. Service is quick and confident, and the menu is ambitious—covering everything from smoked staples to bar snacks and sides that attempt to go beyond the usual. We began with the burnt ends. Nicely charred, tender, and served on a slice of Texas toast, they hit all the right notes. The combo platters followed—one meat and two meat options—with pulled pork, brisket, and wings. The brisket was the standout: juicy, deeply smoked, and well-rendered. Pulled pork was nearly as good, though less distinctive. Wings were flavorful, if undersized. Sides were hit or miss. The mac & cheese was excellent—rich, creamy, with real depth. Collard greens had an unusual hint of barbecue sauce that may divide purists. The baked beans, unfortunately, leaned too heavily on a ketchup-like base. Brussels sprouts were polarizing: roasted well, but the flavor profile felt unfinished. Despite a few culinary stumbles, the overall experience is warm, family-friendly, and worth repeating. Half Liter nails the basics and dares to stretch beyond them, with mixed results. It’s a place that knows its audience and feeds them well—casual, confident, and just refined enough.

Good atmosphere. The meat looked and smelled great. The bun on the shrimp po'boy was soft and buttery. Although the shrimp was pretty tasty and well seasoned, the kitchen missed taking off some of the shells, so I had a couple of chewy bites and had to take the bits out of my mouth; not the most pleasant, but not a big deal. DO NOT order the esquites. They brought me a watery mess with no flavor. Esquites are corn off the cob with crema, queso fresco, etc. They didn’t drain the corn, which looked like watery corn soup. My husband drained the water out on the side of the building, hoping it would get better, but it didn’t help. To boot, the chips they served the esquites with were stale. Even though the atmosphere was lively and fun, the service was slow, and our server looked overworked, so they missed taking an order from someone at our table. I’ve eaten at Half Liter a few times, and they usually do a good job. Not sure if it’s a fluke or if they need to increase staffing to make things run more smoothly in the front of the house and the kitchen.

Wow - what a great place. Our son took us there today. This place is pretty large with a fair amount of inside seating along with outside covered area and a pretty darn large outside area (see pictures) The beer was well made and the food was cooked really well. They have a good selection of meats and dishes to choose from also. I have a Wedge Salad (Fresh - definitely large enough to share) and a Pulled Pork Sandwich (Very Good) that comes with choice of 1 side. My side was the Honey Brussel Sprouts (It was average) My wife ordered the Nachos with pork. It was a huge amount and very shareable! My son had the 2 meat (Brisket @ Pork Butt) - it was gone in no time. He said it was good. Came with 2 Sides. He selected Waffle Fries (good & good amount) - other side was Mac n Cheese (nothing special really to him) Definitely a place to visit if you want good beer and food. The servers were good and attentive and they have plenty of big screen TV’s.
