When the Local Radish was in Beech Grove it was the perfect store, street parking, natural light, wide aisles. Now that it's located in Broadripple, everything I loved is gone and I'm heartbroken.
If you're someone who cares about the parking situation, this store is designed perfectly for foot traffic, and you will have to park down the street to get to them. I wouldn't think this was a problem if I enjoyed that area but since I don't I find it annoying.
Don't get me wrong, I love to see the growth of a small business and I'll say there were more people in store, but the aisles felt crowded. I was scared turning around I'd knock a table over or bump into someone and no one wants to be that guy.
I think my absolute biggest complaint comes from the mood they are trying to set. It's a perfect atmosphere for a coffee or record store. Dark goth academia is edgy and fun and I love emerald green but the shop window is north facing, zero natural lighting, with dark ambiance.................... how am I supposed to pick out the pieces I love most if I can't see it's clarity, depth, flashing, or enjoy the inclusions? I went in for yellow jasper but it looked like black rocks with spray painted yellow spots because it makes the place flat and two dimensional. I ended up not getting the jasper like I hoped. The only sparkle that is clear and eye catching comes from the citrine and pyrite pieces which are not the unique fun pieces that I've come to expect from this store.
During my visit I also noticed that a lot of things are not labeled. I get that it's a new location so it may be taking time but I didn't want to get a stone that I already have at home, I know what the amethysts and onyx pieces are, most of us know a rose quartz, but I wanted a polished palm stone (not a worry stone) and I wanted it to be a unique piece so I grabbed something I'll never know that name of because it's terribly hard to google "milky white stone with cream free form and black tourmaline inclusions" and get the correct answer.
When I got in my car I realized just how disappointed I am because I use to shop here once a month, and I don't think i'll be going back. I wish i didn't feel this way because I love what this shop is doing by bringing in artists and has historically done classes or readings to create a fun community. I'm certainly not boycotting it either. I just won't be spending money on these shiny pretty rocks if I can't see how shiny or how pretty they are. Given the merchandise they sell, I feel lighting is probably the most important thing and that's why this is a two star review.
The owner and her family put love and care into this shop, and I'm a single person so I don't suspect they'll care much or change just because I wrote a book about why I'm upset. I don't like most stores or most people, but I loved what it used to be and I feel like i've...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI visited on Monday and had an amazing experience! Walking in I was floored by the large variety of crystals and stones and was happy to see descriptions on almost all which is really helpful, especially if youāre a socially awkward shopper that gets nervous to ask for help (like me).But donāt worry if the sheer selection overwhelms you (like me) the gal that was working was SO helpful! She was so kind from the jump and let me browse uninterrupted but I didnāt even hesitate to ask for her help when I started to feel lost in it all. She had so much great insight and an energy that made me feel so comfortable telling her what I was looking for and why. She helped me find exactly what I needed and didnāt make me feel uncomfortable saying no to a few options. (You know the feeling when you feel bad saying no to something someone picks out, you wonāt have it here!) She reminded me to take pictures of the descriptor cards so I wouldnāt forget what I purchased after looking at so many things and kept it all ready at the desk for me! On top of that, they also have a beautifully displayed variety of sage, etc with a card that clearly lists the properties of each one. They also have a large selection of incense if thatās your jam! (Itās mine and I had to stop myself looking at the entire walls length selection as I know I already have an overflowing drawer at home I can barely open anymore)
AND THEN, they also have a stunning selection of tarot and oracle decks! This is actually what I originally came for and I was not disappointed. I feel like similar stores have a few options but there was an entire rack of different varieties that all felt very intentionally picked. I really canāt express more the variety. There were beginners and advanced decks and decks for multiple purposes. A lot of them were not ones I had seen online so that was an added interest. They do not have ādemo decksā to preview but I feel like as a local store that makes sense as itās costly and not space effective to order demo decks for every option so thatās not a complaint here and does make you go with more of your intuition on which is best for you. I got three gorgeous decks because I literally couldnāt decide on which one!
Overall, a wonderful spot for the experienced, learning, and new. An amazing environment with extremely helpful staff. Youāll feel like a friend immediately and want to keep coming back just...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is a very pretty, well-merchandised store. The space flows and is well-utilized. I can see why it is so popular. I left a little less than impressed though.
The main thing that bothered me was the tarot reading taking place at extra high volume. A tarot reading doesn't require HIPPA compliance of course, but there were enough personal details being broadcast that I was uncomfortable hearing every word. Most of the volume was the reader, like 90% easy; I definitely wouldn't get a reading here.
When we first stepped in, I was smacked in the olfactories by incense smoke/smell. It's not like I was surprised they were burning incense, it was just a lot. I had to throw my jacket in the washer as soon as I got home. And we never were greeted by anyone from the store.
Minor point: the font on the crystals' info cards is almost impossible to read. There was one stone of interest but we had to Google every possible way it might have been spelled after we left. It took some work. It's a cool font just not the best choice for the application.
Another minor point: I kept smacking into the ladder-mounted suncatchers in the window. I stopped looking at that whole display after the 5th or 6th time. I'm tall, but not that tall. So watch out for that.
An interesting point: all over the store were signs explaining why everything was so expensive. I know crystals and gems aren't cheap, I buy more than anyone I know. But my friend put it best: if you have to constantly justify why your stuff is so expensive, it may be too expensive. Some things I felt were pretty comparable and others I was genuinely shocked at the price.
There's a classroom in the far back with the incense. It is a very open space and I felt like I couldn't really look at the incense and stuff because a class was taking place. A shame, there were all sorts I'd never seen before. Oh well. Classes are always a plus, I'm glad that's something offered here.
We left without buying anything and went to a similar store a few miles away. I'd never been to either and definitely prefer the latter even if they don't have that millennial, boutique vibe. Just not for me. Glad they are doing well and I hope they continue to do so, we need more rock...
