Ruth's Cafe — Restaurant in Indianapolis

I had never been to this perfect, quaint, and cute little cafe before today! Initially, I was not prepared for the jam packed parking lot, and far walk to the restaurant. Everything happens for a reason. The food is so delicious, that the walk to my car afterwards was a much needed calorie burner. My visit was around lunch time, and I decided to try the 1/2 Turkey Club sandwich and 1/2 cactus chili. The sandwich was AMAZING! The turkey isn't a thinly sliced processed lunch meat, rather a seemingly better quality. The club offered bacon, lettuce, cheese and avocado, which I would've eliminated had I known that it was included. I'm glad it was a surprise, because it was a good one! The cactus chili was next level, top knotch, want seconds- goodness! It was sweet, with a little kick. I honestly don't think I've had chili that tasty before. Especially at a restaurant. The service was fast, friendly, and on the ball! This seems to be a place a lot of repeat customers frequent, as staff members were familiar with the patrons. So much so, that our server knew exactly what my lunch partner was going to order, as he is one of the repeat guests! I ordered a to-go bowl of the chili. It's too good to not take some home. I am a REALTOR with an office a half of a mile away from Ruth's, so I will be making a lot of excuses to have clients meet up for lunch with me! In between looking at homes, everyone needs a good...

Nice, artistic atmosphere. For that, I would give 5 stars.

Challot french toast is okay. It is nothing spectacular. I couldn't taste any type of sweet or vanilla batter. I could only taste cinnamon. The syrup was okay but cold....3 stars

Homemade biscuits and gravy was what I was looking forward to. It was runny like a mix between soup and stew. The texture was nowhere near that of gravy. Even after chopping up the two small, hard biscuits, it was not enough to soak up the watery "gravy". Also, the only thing I could taste was the sausage. There was no rich gravy flavor. I had to add a lot of pepper and salt. Biscuits and gravy.....1 star.

I only tried 5 bites of the biscuits and gravy, and I told the server I didn't want a box to take it home. I then tried to tell her I didn't want it because it was soupy and unflavorful. When I started to tell her, she only said, "uh huh" and walked away when I was only 4 or 5 words into explaining. This was very unprofessional. As a nurse, would you want me to do that to you as a patient? No.

She made no effort to tell the owner, nor to remove it from my bill. I did not tip her and left a note explaining why on the receipt.

The staff seemed very friendly, but mine cut me off as soon as I said something wasn't good. For her...Ms Cong....you was 5 but dropped to 1 star. The biscuits and gravy was a bummer but you ruined...

I came to this restaurant for the first time for a morning meeting: so here's an unbiased review.

At first glance, I love the hippie, eclectic feel and warmth of the establishment. I mean, it is super cool. Different daily quiche options, both in vegetarian and meat options. Pancakes, scramble builds, omelettes: everything that you would want in a breakfast cafe.

I ordered the pulled pork quiche and two cheesecake pancakes - the pancakes are a popular item and highly recommended, so I had to try them. The pulled pork quiche was pretty good - lots of flavor, perfect texture, great portion size, etc. The pancakes, however, although they were bigger than the plate (which was huge), they were gummy and chewy in texture.

Let me explain. They were so gummy that it was hard to cut the pancake with both the fork or the knife. Now, I'm not a chef, but I'm not a stranger to the kitchen either, especially when it comes to pancakes - they are literally my fave. The chewy texture from the pancakes proves one thing: they over mix their pancake batter. When pancake batter is over mixed, there's a chemical reaction in the batter, that when cooked makes the pancakes really chewy. That was a no go for me.

Since I'm a pancake lover, my motive on this review is to review the pancakes, and the other things mentioned above are above satisfactory.

Overall, great vibe, nice staff, good quiche, but the pancakes...
