I'm a self-proclaimed Middle Eastern food connoisseur. I have often been disappointed, so when I finally had the opportunity to go to Shawarma House in Jackson TN (not a city known for it's cultural diversity), I kept my expectations low. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I had my family with me and we all were very happy with our selections. I had the Falafel appetizer and a Chicken Shawarma sandwich. They were both absolutely delicious. Falafel is not the most challenging food to make, but many just get it wrong. Usually it is too dry and hard. This had a crusty exterior with a very soft and flavorful interior. It had a small bowl of Tahini with it, which was good too. My Chicken Shawarma Sandwich was wrapped in a real pita, not the thick/doughy Greek style Gyro bread that many restaurants use. The chicken was flavorful. It wasn't the usual shawarma I am used to, that is shaved off a spinning slab of meat on a heater/cooker, but nonetheless it was very well done and tasty. Needless to say, I overate because I enjoyed it so much. I had a side salad as well and it was very fresh. The only issue the evening we went was that they were busy (a large group had just been seated before us) and the food took time. In the US we like everything fast; but that is not necessarily customary elsewhere in the world, especially if you want to eat real/home cooked meals that take time to prepare. The employee, possibly the owner, came up to the table and apologized, acknowledging the delay, and that quickly took care of issue. I would definitely recommend this restaurant especially for a casual meal. I will be back now for more Falafel and chicken Shawarma sandwiches in the future (maybe after going to the gym first to make...
Read moreLoved this place! Always looking for a good Middle Eastern restaurant in the area. Came all the way up from Savannah Tennessee and it was well worth it. It's a small family business. Staff was friendly and helpful. Food was amazing! I ordered several appetizers because they had a bunch of my favorites. The best was the kibbeh, the hummous was fantastic, light and lemony, the falafels were also good, and the pickled vegetable appetizer was slightly spicy and acidic and was a great bite to cleanse the palate in between. Husband had the mixed plate with chicken, beef, and lamb, and all of the meats were flavorful and cooked perfectly. Very authentic, very tasty, all homemade using family recipes. They also had their own Dubai chocolate bars (I haven't had the original but these were pretty good) and baklava. Also enjoyed one of their non-alcoholic drinks, the Lemonada which was fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and mint and it was one of the best beverages I've ever had! 10/10 would highly recommend...
Read moreI am vegan and 90% of the menu meets my approval. That is rare for me. I love a place that makes clean meals with clean ingredients.
I met the main chef and she is caring, thoughtful and makes amazing dishes that are healthy and savory.
Soups, numerous varieties of salads, the grape leaves, and falafel sandwich are all amazing.
The to-go container for salads or hummus are the largest I've seen. When eating indoors, the artisanal plates are a delight and improves the dining experience considerably.
People who work there are genuine, real, authentically nice and deeply customer oriented.
As far as dessert, the Baklava is handmade by the main chef. This Baklava is a combination of a healthy snack that is also wholesome, not overly sweet, multi-layered like a cake and absolutely phenomenal. The Baklava is a larger version than what I've seen in other establishments and is far and above the quality of other Baklava I have eaten anywhere...
