Transportation: Travelled up from South Jersey on the train and then took the PATH in to Journal Square. The restaurant is located about a 15 minute walk from the train station. This gave us a great opportunity to pick up a bottle of wine on the way - it’s a BYO. We did Uber back to the PATH at night time though, since we are unfamiliar with the area. Easy. If driving, parking may be tricky though because most of the “spots” that look open are for the residents.
Building/Atmosphere: Restaurant is located next to (what looks like) an abandoned building in a neighborhood. It would be missed unless you know what you are looking for (the lights help) - Part of what, I’m sure, contributes to other reviewers “speak easy vibes” that are mentioned.
Inside - it’s Nona’s house. Quaint, cozy but honestly hard to turn around inside when there’s a lot of people. It’s decorated well and most of the seating areas seem private- especially if you’re lucky enough to sit next to the kitchen on the main floor - You are tucked away! The atmosphere was so intimate.
Food: pretty good. It stands to reason not everything is going to be enjoyed by everyone’s palette (some people didn’t like some things and that’s ok!) - but the food was delightful (probably better because of the service) and I tried everything that was offered. Some things I could take or leave, like the desserts. The desserts to me were ok… and not what I was expecting for the price. No tiramisu, no rainbow cookies, no cannolis - which are some of my favs. I heard the menu changes, but my food looked similar to what others had already posted in reviews. My least favorite food for our meal was a little “pizza” they brought out as an appetizer which was just a little bit of dough, sauce, and Parmesan. Favorite thing was the polenta with sausage, and I enjoyed the eggplant and manicotti as well. Also, my coffee towards the end was heavenly - the young server said they receive a lot of compliments on the coffee.
Service: Amazing. Two ladies greeted us and took care of us throughout the night with the help of a younger guy. The chef came around and talked with us too which was lovely. Dinner is 2.5 hours and about half way through they ask you to take a walk and they change out plates and napkins, which was very nice.
I gave it four stars for a few reasons. It was pricey. $800+ for 6 people with tax and tip, plus money to travel to the restaurant (PS- it is cash only). But you’re going for the EXPERIENCE. I would say - I was full but those who can fit more in their bellies 😉may find that a couple hours later they need a small snack. They do offer to-go containers, but the portions aren’t large (it’s enough to share around the table but not really enough for seconds), so no leftovers to take. Dessert was good but not great (and it’s my favorite part of a meal).
Also, we were on their wait list OVER A YEAR. If you put your name on the list- put their number in your phone because when they call - you need to answer or you’ll miss your opportunity! Lastly, there are so many unique restaurants to try in Jersey and NY/PA, that I likely won’t be back, but I am so thankful for...
Read moreI would like to start off by saying this culture we have with restaurants demanding so much effort on our part just for us to spend MONEY at their establishment needs to stop. I called 15 Fox Place today and had quite possibly the worst reservation experience I have ever had period, whether it be for a restaurant, a hotel, or a vespa scooter. Worst and reservation are the key words here. I called back in the beginning of September and was told they had no space until January. I spoke to someone on the phone for 7 minutes, as evidenced by call logs, and hammered out the details of this reservation, that happened to be my anniversary dinner. I went on with my life assuming that it was taken care of. I called today to confirm and to ask a few questions; only to be told that no such reservation exists, which would have been enough to be annoying but not enough to review. What makes this extremely annoying and horrible situation even worse is the rude, flippant way the woman who answered the phone dealt with what was clearly her mistake (as she claimed to be the only one who makes reservations at this establishment). She proceeded to, in no particular order, tell me that 1.The restaurant has become popular on tiktok so I would of had to call months ago (I did), 2.That she guessed she cant tell me wrong because the customer is always supposed to be right, 3. Stated multiple times she doesnt know where she would of put my CREDIT CARD INFORMATION as well as everything else she asked for if we had actually spoken on the phone. Since we most certainly did speak on the phone, I dont think she was making the point she thinks she was when she repeatedly told me she lost my card info. I hung up the phone feeling defeated and crazy, only to check my phone records and see I did in fact speak to someone for 7 minutes in September, as well as find text messages between me and my girlfriend moments later excitedly discussing the reservation this woman said never was made. This was extremely disappointing, and I hope that this saves some people in the future (if you do decide to dance for your supper, as so many restaurants demand these days) some hassle when booking. Please ask for a confirmation email of some sort, and to the restaurant? Please work on your reservation system. If you would prefer to remain analog, make sure you keep the records, or as your representative said your booked until July, use some of those profits for an automated system. As your representative told me, this happens all the time lately, and I dont think that means everyone else is...
Read moreI was so excited to come here with my husband, brother and sister in law and all of that was tainted by the woman who deals with the reservations. We were on the waiting list for over a year which I expected, so when I got a call in March with a date I was very excited. Unfortunately my aunt passed away and we could not make the reservation so I called back notifying we could not make it. I was met with a very harsh tone by the woman on the phone I think her name is Mary? She seemed extremely annoyed I had to cancel and it’s not like I was pressuring to get a new reservation. I would’ve understood if I had to wait or get moved to the back of the list. But she found a new date for us May 30th or 31st. She told me to check with the rest of my party and call her back with which date I wanted. I called her right back a couple minutes later and chose May 30th and everything was set. Fast forward to the week of May 30th, I realized they never called me to remind me of my reservation, because I know they usually do that. So I called 3 days before to make sure we were good. I got some guy on the phone who was super confused and said Mary would call me back. When she called me she was IMMEDIATELY defensive and angry. I couldn’t have sounded any nicer or calmer on the phone and she was jumping down my throat how there was no way that I had a reservation and she made me explain our past phone conversations, which I did. When I would try to talk she would cut me off and I was just completely taken back by how nasty she sounded towards me. I told her I wasn’t lying about this and I remember everything vividly because again, I was very excited to finally have this reservation. After I said I wasn’t lying she changed her tune slightly and said she wasn’t accusing me of that but she doesn’t understand how she’s been doing this 25 years and has never made a mistake. I’m sorry but everyone makes mistakes and if she did make a mistake it’s fine I wasn’t going to shame her over the phone and would’ve just taken a new reservation for another time. She did offer me a new reservation but I was so turned off between the March phone call when I lost my aunt and she gave me attitude and then this conversation in May. I’m so disappointed my hopes of going to this place were tainted all by this one woman. My advice to anyone looking to go here. Confirm a thousand times with this woman that you have the date set and ask her to double check your name and credit card info is written down in the...
