Karen Bakery — Restaurant in Jersey City

I came across Karen bakery randomly while looking for bakeries in the JC area. The store is unassuming and the smell of fresh baked bread hits you as you enter. It was amazing to see the carts full of freshly baked carbs. There were no menus so, it was a little confusing trying to figure out what to get. Ended up getting a bag of buttermilk bread and a box of basbousa (sweet semolina cake). The buttermilk bread was gigantic! Probably measured at least 12"x12". It's a flatbread with many layers, seems like it would be good to dip with soup or use as a wrap. The basbousa was satisfyingly sweet, with a gritty texture because of the semolina but would pair very well with some tea for an afternoon snack. Can't wait to return to try out some other...

I have purchased ghorayebah cookies from Karen’s (by way of Balady in Brooklyn) for numerous years. I’ve laughed many times at the misspelled labels and was happy to see the last package didn’t have 1 misspelled word - yay. HOWEVER I AM DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE QUALITY now. Ghorayebah cookies are supposed to have an almond in the middle of EACH cookie. There was ONE almond in the entire package - out of like 30 cookies - ONE ALMOND!
