We came here tonight to eat while we were out in Johnson city looking at the lights with family, we ordered our food our waitress couldn’t really understand what we were trying to order, we ordered a child's taco plate (soft taco), #1 enchiladas, two beef and cheese soft tacos by themself and the Texas plate or something like that. Our server came back with our food and started handing us our plates when I realized My daughters child plate was not a child’s plate and had two tacos on it, I said to her “this was supposed to be a child’s plate” she told me it was fine just to keep it since it was the same thing just an extra taco, I told her that’s fine. They handed us the rest of our food only other thing that was wrong was they brought us extra tacos we did not order and they took those back. (Looking very annoyed) again we didn’t order that & we didn’t need it. Not our fault the waitress didn’t understand what we were ordering.. after we ate we had went up to pay they told me to wait a second and went and got a manager, he walks up to us and the first thing he says “did you eat the plate” at first I couldn't understand what he was asking, then I realized oh he’s asking if we ate I said well yes we did? Then he goes see you ate all the food in the plate were charging you for an adult plate, let me remind you this was supposed to be a child’s plate. I was honestly shocked because it’s not about the money I didn't mind having to pay for the plate but the way he immediately approached me asking if we ate off the plate and then tried to accuse my daughter 10 years old of eating everything on that plate when she indeed did not was insane. She looked scared by the way, I had to ask my 8 and 10 year old to stand by the door after that happened, then he proceeded to argue with me about the eaten food? I then said well they told us to just keep it? Still not sure why he is so upset about this. Smiling at me while he says “you ate all the food” does that even matter??? It wasn’t even our mess up. Honestly I probably wouldn’t of even known we were charged for an adult plate or even cared but how dare you say something like this? Very ugly behavior. I then told him do not speak to me like that, it’s very disrespectful and embarssing because I’m not the one wrong here? If the food was eaten or not who cares??!! Don’t tell us to keep the food then throw a fit when we go to pay. We went back and fourth for a min and then I told him he definitely needs to learn how to run his restaurant because that ain’t it. The food was “ok” nothing special. But after this I definitely will never return. He continues to argue with me even after paying! As I’m still telling him, I have My children here and this is embarrassing and ridiculous, do better and be better! The manager of this place is a JOKE. If you’re that money hungry you should have just taken the damn plate back and re made another one!! Oh and I forgot the server tried to say my daughter ate the plate clean! When we got up from the table and I wish I would Have taken a picture of her plate for proof but she definitely did not, and why even lie about something like that?! It’s beyond me. Don’t go here spend your money somewhere else with better food and service. This was our first time. Never again. Still can’t believe how embarrassing this was. 😒 I did not want to even give them a 1 start they don’t even...

My husband and I wanted to eat something besides sandwiches for the day snacks we brought for our trip from Houston. Johnson City does not have much variety, especially after 8 pm on Mondays, so we made our choices from Google suggestions.

The ratings at Subway and Dairy Queen were dismal, so they we automatically ruled them out (we'd like to not have food poisoning during our trip).

One other bar(ish) place on 290 was not very appealing to us at the moment, and we like Mexican/Tex-Mex food, so we opted to forego this place.

Now, our choices were between El Charro and El Agave. El Charro photos on Google looked very sad, Eeyore sad. So, we decided to try El Agave. Google photos looked more promising. Please keep in mind that we LOVE Monterrey's Little Mexico, so our standards are reasonably low.

El Agave was internally sad. They have the sadness of a silver-spoon fed, emo child who only pretends they aren't loved enough, but in reality, they just don't care. The food has potential, but because the employees don't care the food is subpar.

My husband ordered the taco salad. Even Taco Bell can't mess those things up, but by some possessed demon El Agave did. It was small, tasteless, and runny like I pray we aren't later.

I ordered a la carte... The combo diners were so simply listed I didn't really know what I would be ordering. The "typical plate" section of their menu was definitely not typical. Again, I've eaten Mexican food all over this state, with the obvious exception of Johnson City, apparently. So, I felt my safest choice was a la carte.

My plate consisted of one dreadful bean chalupa that would make Taco Bell cry, one cheese enchilada with questionable "rubber tire" consistency yellow cheese that seems to only deflate once heated, guacamole salad someone knew nothing about making, and the typical refried beans and rice. Simple enough, but again... even Taco Bell would be crying. It was tough, soggy, bland, and tasted of pure sadness. So sad that I'm the Children of the Corn received more hugs than these employees do. I digress.

Anyway, my point is that this place sucked. Had it not been nearly 8 pm, we probably would have driven to San Antonio to eat at Casa Rio. I think we'll stop there on our why back to Houston if we still retain our organs after eating at El Agave during our trip.

Definitely not worth the $30+ we spent. Btw, who the heck charges the same amount for ground beef and fajita beef? Oh, this place does. Spare yourselves and make sandwiches. Lowe's down the road has happy(er) employees and has all the fixin's. The chats are nice, too.

P.S. Their alcoholic beverages appeared to be watered down. Pick up a 6 pack of beer from Lowe's,...

Last night my husband's family came from out of town to look at the lights and go out to eat. We spoke very highly of El Agave, and they decided to go. Well we get there, I noticed how filthy the tables and floors were.. I assumed they were busy.. We ordered our drinks and food, I told Angelica (our waitress) that I am highly allergic to avocado/guacamole that I do not want any and to put extra sour cream please. Our food came out, my niece's food didn't get out until 10 minutes after we had gotten ours, our tea glasses were never filled. My mouth started breaking out and I thought what in the world, I looked down at they had the avocado/guacamole mixed in the salad. Luckily we had some Benadryl with us, and luckily my sister in law let me have some of her water so I could take the Benadryl since they would never fill our glasses. My husband went up to the counter to ask them to refill our cups and to tell them about the avocado. The only response he got was "I'm sorry." she finally came to fill our glasses, and brought back a plate of lettuce and tomato, I looked at her and said "well I don't want to eat now, my mouth is broke out and my face in going numb." "oh, okay" she says, sets it on the table beside us and walks off. instead of taking my plate, and all of the other half empty plates back, she left them there. I started looking around, all of the tables were filled with dishes and food. The tables were never cleaned. We went to go pay the bill, Angelica had the nerve to ask "was everything okay?" I looked at my in laws, one of them said "well to be honest it wasn't that great at all." angelica then proceeds to say sorry. I asked where the management was, I'd like to talk to them, and she said, "well I guess you can come back in the morning to talk to them." At that point I was LIVID!! I said well I guess I could always call the health department, maybe they will talk to me. Angelica didn't say anything. The allergic reaction left me with the left side of my body numb, not just my face, my arm and leg too. Luckily the Benadryl kicked in and I started feeling a little better a few hours later and went to bed. The food was awful too, but I could have dealt with that better than the allergic reaction. I have never been so embarrassed and disappointed. I guess people don't understand food allergies. I hope the business owner reads this and stresses the importance of food allergies and customer service. Needless to say, you have lost our business entirely. I hope your staff doesn't serve someone else that has food allergies, and theirs be way...

The atmosphere was casual, and typical of a Mexican restraunt. The waitress took our drink order and was prompt in bringing the drinks out and took our food order. The food was delivered in about 10 minutes. We requested more salsa, which was never providee. There was so much cheese on the plates we scraped most of it off. No one in our party finished any of the plates. They were too greasy from so much cheese. The waitress returned later and asked how everything was. We informed her there was too much cheese and she acted as if she did not understand and asked if we were ready for the ticket and walked away. She spoke with someone else. Another waitress delivered the cheque to us. They did not even try to resolve this issue and avoided the complaint. This was the first, and last, time I will be going to this restraunt.

Great little tex-mex/mexican joint. The seats have cool embroidery and are very solid tables which adds to the natural Mexican restaurant feel. I usually get the barbacoa plate but the carne asada is also delicious. The margaritas seem a little bit syrupy. But the prices are very affordable and they'll usually walk out paying only 40 or $50 for two people. The chips and salsa that you originally get seem very authentic and the chips are very thick and crunchy. All in all this is definitely a good Mexican place if you're driving through Johnson City and need to grab a quick bite at an affordable price.
