I loved this place from the start! Perfect place to play board games with friends, eat some good food and have a beer at a large table! The staff is also excellent! My group has gaming tables of their own along with myself but we like it so much we go downtown to play weekly. I've even made new friends to play board games with which is always a plus. Sadly I feel like this board game pub is doing a COMPLETE 180, pretty much anything regarding table top hobbies has been or will be moved upstairs. The restaurant is taking over and it appears that they are adding more "bar like" activities for a bar than a board gaming pub. To me it just kind of feels like a low blow to have been supporting Mulligans while there is NO restaurant or NO bar then when the restaurant and bar open we are ushered upstairs like we are getting pushed off to the side. I get you all want the restaurant to thrive but it's almost two completely different entities now...I really hope this review speaks to the owners but who knows.
Update:
Mulligans is not a gaming pub (in the realm of tabletop games) like it claims to be. I think it's kind of a stretch to even call it that to be hoenst. I've gone several times since I've posted my review to play with my group and we normally are the only table playing games. Occasionally there is another table but that's about it...the photos they have on their site in the "board game section" of their front page are SO far from what the place is now, there is hardly any games to sell, minatures to buy, etc. They got rid of all of that pretty much in a giant sale they had not long ago. I get they are going to do what they want but it's just not the same anymore. All the employees we liked are now gone, its just a shame and not what I...
Read moreThis place is nothing short of fabulous! Talk about a hidden gem... well, one that's not so hidden!
My hubs and I walked into this spacious but cozy pub and were immediately greeted by Keith, who made us feel very welcome. After we were seated and our server gave us menus, Sean, the owner, sat with us a chatted a while about the pub's backstory and his vision for its future.
After our server ran us through the specials, we ordered the Scotch Eggs for an appetizer and we both ordered the fish and chips. Both dishes were incredible!
The Scotch Eggs were a new experience for us and are now on our short list of favorite appetizers. Hard boiled eggs wrapped in sausage, coated with breadcrumbs and fried, with a honey mustard dipping sauce on the side. Sounds simple, yes? But the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. Wow! (Picture taken after we ate half.)
The fish and chips were without a doubt the best in east Tennessee by far. The thick, flaky, perfectly cooked cod with an extremely flavorful, crispy beer batter is on a new level of delicious. The fries were thick cut and crispy on the outside but creamy and fluffy on the inside. The dish came with a nice tartar sauce and a pickle spear. And to top it off, the table condiments include a bottle of malt vinegar, which in my mind, is a must for fish and chips.
The most surprising thing was the place was not packed! With great food and an atmosphere like this, I can't believe there wasn't a line out the door waiting for a table.
Let's change that! I'm here to say if you don't try this place, you're losing out on a treasure chest of great food, good people, and a comfortable,...
Read moreWe enjoyed a late lunch at Mulligan's Gaming Pub this week. I had seen the review in the Kingsport Times-News and had been wanting to go, since I love Irish food and drink. We were not disappointed. We arrived around 2:00 PM in the afternoon after the lunch crowd and were greeted by the cheerful owners, who were very nice and took the time to tell us about the space that they had lovingly renovated (A former Charles Store). I had Fish and chips and my wife had Shepherd's Pie. My fish and chips were great - thick pieces of beer-batterd Cod fish that were golden brown and crunchy on the outside. The fish was tender and flaky and had a wonderful texture and taste, especially when dipped in the home-made tartar sacue. The "chips" were also fried to a golden brown crispiness and soft on the inside. I sprang for the dinner portion (2 filets and more fries) since I was eating a late lunch/early dinner. My wife's Shepherd's Pie was also excellent, topped with creamy mashed potatoes. The lamb meat and vegetables underneath were tender and seasoned perfectly, and were very rich, creamy, and filling. We also sampled some cheesecake and a warm blueberry scone with Irish butter - Both were delicious! You should definitely give them a try. I was so happy to see and Irish restaurant in our area, especially since so many if us share Irish/Scottish ancestry, and it is just up the street from Freiberg's - also a wonderful...
