Sure! Here's the combined and detailed review of Anejo Modern Mexican Cuisine:
My husband and I recently dined at Anejo Modern Mexican Cuisine and had a mixed experience overall. The restaurant had been open for only two months, and it was evident that they were still working out some kinks in their operations.
We started with the chicken enchiladas and the Carne Asada. Unfortunately, the chicken in the enchiladas was underseasoned, which left the dish lacking in flavor. However, the combination of white sauce and salsa Verde that accompanied the enchiladas was a pleasant surprise. It had a delicious tangy flavor that complemented the dish well. The rice served with both the enchiladas and the Carne Asada was a standout, prepared to perfection and packed with great taste.
Speaking of the Carne Asada, it fell short of expectations. The meat was disappointingly tough, making it difficult to enjoy. Furthermore, it was overly seasoned, and toning down the seasoning would have greatly improved the dish. While the flavors were there, the texture and tenderness of the meat were lacking.
Moving on to the guacamole, it was decent but needed some fine-tuning. A touch of salt and a squeeze of lime would have elevated the flavors and made it more memorable.
One significant issue we encountered was the disorganized nature of the staff. Throughout our meal, we had to repeatedly ask for drink refills and request chips whenever we ran out. It became apparent that the waitstaff lacked proper coordination and attention to detail. The fact that the restaurant had been open for just two months and had already served alcohol without a liquor license raised concerns about their overall management and organization. This aspect significantly impacted our overall experience and left us feeling frustrated.
Furthermore, the hot salsa was another area that needed improvement. The consistency of the salsa was odd, and it lacked the vibrant flavors one expects from a good hot salsa. It lacked the desired kick and depth, and it would benefit from enhancements to its flavor profile and achieving a smoother consistency.
Despite these shortcomings, there were bright spots in our dining experience, such as the delightful combination of white sauce and salsa Verde, as well as the flavorful rice. However, the underseasoned chicken enchiladas, tough Carne Asada, underwhelming guacamole, and disorganized staff overshadowed these positives.
In conclusion, Anejo Modern Mexican Cuisine has potential, but they need to address several aspects to provide a more satisfying dining experience. They should focus on improving the seasoning and tenderness of their meats, refining the guacamole, and working on the consistency and flavor of their hot salsa. Additionally, the management should prioritize training their staff to be more attentive and organized. With these improvements, Anejo Modern Mexican Cuisine could become a more successful and enjoyable dining...
Read moreBack again 5/5 and 5/17: It had been too long and we were really craving some authentic Mexican food and margaritas. The food, drinks, service and atmosphere were outstanding. I'd give them 6 stars if Google would allow it.
2/6 update: I can honestly say this is the best authentic Mexican restaurant around and that's 1-million percent true because we're from a border town. What's even better than the food is the miracle story of how the Ortiz family risked it all to be in the USA and eventually in KC. Now they have the two prime spots in the city.
1/18 update: Been back several times including a party of 30 . Food and service have been great each time. The tequila and mezcal drinks are really good. Half off apps for happy hour are a great deal.
3rd trip experience: Had the shrimp stuffed poblano pepper and green chili chicken enchiladas....even better than last time. I'm not lying to you KC when I say this is legitimately the best. The reason I think several reviews are low is the restaurant had to stop offering adult drinks due to a liquor license issue that arose at the very opening of this new location.
2nd trip experience: Listen up KC, this local family has been through a lot to open this Zona spot so let's support them because this is great Mexican food (I know because we grew up in New Mexico). The Zona location really has an awesome vibe and rooftop too. The food is delicious and mezcal is really good. This is a legit spot to enjoy true Mexican food and atmosphere. The bar is huge and staff were friendly on both visits. I wish the Zona restaurant Manager could post on FB and Google more about what's going on. Margarita selection is also great (likely the best in KC). The Mezcal brand illegal is delicious chilled. Tacos, fajitas, enchiladas and the poblano shrimp plates are very good.
Excellent first experience. Place was packed so snuck in at the bar. Chips and salsa were immediately brought out. Bartender immediately asked us what we like to drink and made recommendations.
We asked for drink recommendations which were the Oaxaca margarita and jalapeno margarita. We asked to try the house tequila and were very surprised at how good it was. Their custom tequila has a little bit of sweet to it which makes it easy to drink and is 80 proof.
After perusing the menu, we found plenty that we would like and made the difficult choice of street tacos plus poblano shrimp dish.
Service was outstanding and people around us were super cool.
This is our new Taco Tuesday place and We didn't even get to try the rooftop!
Great job and glad you...
Read moreTook my daughter to dinner last night to celebrate a big step for her. Joined by my husband and he boyfriend. We went on Tuesday and they has some nice taco and margarita specials. The margaritas were good. I got the house, my husband got the spicy mango pineapple, my daughter got the mango margarita and her boyfriend ordered a modelo. All of the drinks were great and priced reasonably with the special. Before we ordered our food, we asked for more chips. We also order the street corn dip. We then placed our food orders. The chips never came and the corn dip was delivered and we mentioned we still needed chips. The person who delivered the dip didn't acknowledge us and we never saw our server until she brought our dinner dishes to the table. We mentioned we'd had the dip and still no chips. She unapologetically asked if we would like more chips or to have the corn dip removed. We asked for chips. The chips were later brought. The corn dip tasted good. I ordered the happy fiesta plate. My food was okay, nothing that would make we want to go back. My husband ordered a chimichanga. His chimichanga was soggy and small. The meat was ok, the beans lacked flavor. My daughter ordered the Anejo Playa with grilled steak. The cheese covering the dish was very good but the steak was very over seasoned and was super salty. Her boyfriend ordered the Taquitos Mexicanos. He said they were okay, nothing he'd order again. Overall I feel like the food was very overpriced and wasn't great tasting. The drinks were great. If we come back we will probably only get drinks. There's too many other great Mexican restaurants with great tasting food and decently priced in the area. Sadly I was disappointed and was really hoping we had found a...
