I am a big fan of La Quinta. So much so, we stayed strictly in La Quinta hotels on our entire trip from Washington to Kansas. However, this is not the experience I expected.
Let's start with the pros (as this list is far shorter than the cons) the location is nice. There is a gas station with a convenience store about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. There are a few food places within walking distance as well, such as an Arby's and McDonald's. The staff is pretty friendly. The person I initially checked in with was very accommodating as far as extending our stay (this is before we even got to the room). There is a pool and a fitness center (see cons). The hotel is also one of the few hotels that is pet friendly.
Now, the cons. The room was dirty. There were stains on the walls, the AC unit, the curtains, and there was a giant hairball stuck to the wall of the shower. The shower also has rust stains all over it. The bed sheets were halfway put on (it looked the it had a watercover under the fitted sheet, but it was only on half the corners). The room door was broken, so you had to hold the key card to it several times. The continental breakfast was okay, except they ran out of everything. Breakfast starts at 6, I got there at 6:10 and there was no juice, no eggs, just the waffle maker and yogurt (also, given the state of the room, I'm not entirely sure of the cleanliness of the food equipment). There is a pool, as noted in the pros, but it is pretty small. Really only 3-4 people could realistically use it without being right on top of each other. The fitness center is not maintained. Inside it is an elliptical, treadmill, and bike; all of which do not work. There is a cable machine that is rusted and the little bar to lock the weights on it gets stuck and is next to impossible to move. They say there is a "pet area", but it is really just a thin sliver of grass that is along the parking lot. The pet bags and waste bin wasn't empty once over the 3 nights we were there. I put 2 stars for the service, because, even though the initial gentleman was nice, I'm not sure the hotel has a great system keeping track of booking. We booked for 3 nights and after the first night, at 11:00 (what would be checkout) someone walked into our room. We then got a call to the room asking if we were going to check out or if I wanted them to extend my stay, to which I informed them I already had the room booked for 2 more nights.
Overall, not what I expected. We had no choice, but to stay as there were no other hotels available that accepted cats for the nights we needed. I would say you get what you pay for, but this was by far our most expensive stay on our trip ($160/night) with the lowest quality. If you don't have to stay here, I certainly wouldn't...
Read moreExceeded expectations. Honestly I was not expecting much, an average experience at best, based on other reviews. I was pleasantly surprised that this property is maintained as much as you can with an older building. The lobby was clean and the carpeting was way more up to date than I expected from the outside. Check in was easy, took maybe 5 minutes, and the front desk agent was very nice and helpful. We had a pet friendly room on the first floor, it was clean and had everything we needed. There was no lingering odors from the pups that were there before us. The bed was like a dream. So comfortable I didn’t want to get out of it. We could faintly hear voices from the next room every now and then so I could see why other reviews mentioned thin walls. If there was a rowdy group or people who didn’t care if their kids screamed non-stop it definitely would have been an issue and an entirely different experience. I don’t know if it’s the hotel management doing an excellent job of policing or we just got lucky during our stay, but the overwhelming smell of weed that I get 9/10 times I stay somewhere, regardless of the room rate, was a non issue during our stay. The hallway had that musty hotel odor and could use some type of commercial air freshener, but I’d take musty over weed any day. The quality of the breakfast was also a nice surprise and was much better than hotels with nightly rate 3x’s as much. Something for everyone, hot and cold options. The best think I agree the outside areas need a little attention but it’s not so bad that it made us not want to stay. I felt the lighting was adequate for the size of the parking lot and was on par with any other hotel that size. The only other negative was the lack of entrances. Most hotels have at least one side entrance halfway down the building, this one did not. There is a door in the very back of the building, the lobby entrance, and an oddly placed door that lead into the breakfast area from the outside. That was very strange considering there are no other exit points on that side of the building. We stayed two nights and would’ve been happy with a longer stay. Despite the few negatives, I haven’t found a hotel that provides this much value at the rate we paid in a long time. Four Seasons it is not, but its an excellent choice for a comfortable, clean room, with great breakfast items, in a convenient location, that won’t...
