Sorry long 1, but 2 stars needs explaining as I don't typically go that low.. This place looks incredible. They obviously put a ton of time, thought and $$$ into redoing this place. The menu is great with a mix of traditional and Irish European choices along with pizza options etc. My wife and were Invited here by our friends which 1 of them is a chef. The chef ordered the food for all of us which consisted of ordering almost every appetizer. The apps were spot on... the house made chips were perfect, onion & cheese dips, gauc were all delicious, fries & gravy were delicious, scotch egg & beef n beer bites were incredible. When chef ordered the apps he also ordered the main course. After over an hour chef finally went to the bar to inquire about the main course because way too much time had passed between apps & next course. About 5 minutes later the food arrived. Chicken Tendies, Shepard's Pie, Bierock, Filet Medallions. Filet was cooked perfect, but absolutely no spices, salt, pepper anything on steak or veggies. Veggies were cold, Tendies were hot, but mash/gravy & green beans all cold, Bierock was so overcooked it cracked & split wide open once touched with a knife. Crust was dark brown crunchy super thin & absolutely impossible to eat, fries were cold. Sherpard's pie was great and had lamb and of course having a chef with you he explained that the carrots were very crunchy undercooked seemed to be added late in the process he thinks. So manager drops by & this is where it got crazy.. Chef explains everything, but manager is blatantly watching the TV above us & when asked his opinion said that he was waiting for chef to quit talking. Said he didn't know how to respond to chef's wife who said the Bierock was horrible, then just pretty much blows us off. He comp'd all or most of the main course (I wasn't paying so not sure) the big deal here is that Chef wasn't even intending to get/ask for anything for free he was giving his feedback as a professional and the manager was rude & disrespectful instead of using this as a learning moment... he was even pointing at us and talking to another customer as we walked out. Truly a bizarre moment in a restaurant. If I am in the area I will probably go again because there was great apps and atmosphere and we need to keep local biz going. I really wanted to try the Bierock as I have never had 1 and it sounded very interesting. I am disappointed it ended as it did, but maybe someone will see this and think about the outcome. It seemed very simple learning experience for servers & back of house... sides were plated way too early hence the cold sides, Bierock appeared to be burnt so server don't serve it.. cook should have dropped a new 1 immediately upon...
Read moreI visited today with my husband and friends. I love the new look of it compared to the previous establishment. the restrooms were clean, the bar was organized and clean, and the seats were comfortable. The staff seemed friendly and welcoming. There were a few downsides unfortunately that drive down my rating. First of all they only have regular milk which is not a big deal to me, but for an establishment that appeals to the LGBTQ community and possibly hipsters, I'm surprised they have nothing like oat milk or almond milk as an alternative. The waitress was friendly as I said earlier, but she never really came around to refill drinks or see how we were doing. I had to walk up to the bar to get my water refilled. She also told us that they basically frown upon having a pizza be half and half. It was going to inconvenience them. The place was not busy at the time and second that is such a simple and easy request that you would think they would want to make the guests happy so they'd return. It's not as if I asked them to go milk the cow and make their own cheese. The most disappointing part was that the pizza was terrible. The waitress said it was Italian sausage but it definitely was not. It was plain sausage with no spices or kick at all. There was a major lack of seasoning, garlic, or any other spices that might elevate the pizza. My husband said it reminded him of the rectangular pizza that we all were served back in school. It was so bland that I ate half a small piece then stopped. I had to go home and eat afterwards. Luckily my friends enjoyed their burgers, but I could not say the same for my meal. Last, I guess there are no paper checks or receipts, so the servers swipe your credit/debit cards at the table. This becomes awkward when giving a tip and having the server standing right beside you watching what you press. I want to return and give this place a chance since it is local and not a chain, but the food and service left...
Read moreWhere else can you get SCOTCH EGGS? I have not had them yet, but I plan to when I go back, and I will go back. So glad we found this fantastic Public House, though it is a bit off the beaten track (which might be a blessing in disguise). Each time we have been, we have had a different waiter, and I am happy to say that service has been consistently good. The drink prices are fairly standard, and I heard their cocktails are good though I did not imbibe this visit. What I did do was eat, and the food was surprisingly good! The menu is not standard bar fare, more reminiscent of the Gastro Pub scene that swept London a decade ago. Having moved to KC from Northern California, Gael's Guac is a bit too Nouveau California for my taste. I prefer a more traditional guac. The pizzas are a great deal for the size, the amount of toppings, and the taste. More than one person in our party had to ask for a box to take home the rest of their pizza. The Pork Tenderloin "Handheld" now ranks among my favorite KC sandwiches. The pork was perfectly prepared, moist, and only lightly breaded. The lettuce and tomato were firm (sounds odd to review toppings, but too many restaurants plop down limp and lifeless lettuce and floppy, soggy tomatoes). I opted for a side of fries. I always ask for the fries to be EXTRA, EXTRA CRISPY. Sadly 95% of restaurants bring out the same sad fries they serve every day, and I always have to return them, sometimes as many as 3 times. Gael's brought out some of the crispiest fries I've had here! There are many other items I want to try on this menu, so we will definitely return. They haven't been open long, and I hope the level of service and food remains as high (or gets even higher) as crowds discover this place. I don't think it will be a...
