A Flavor Odyssey on Troost: Urban Café Redefines Culinary Soul
There are moments when a meal becomes more than sustenance—it transforms into an experience, a full-bodied encounter with flavor, creativity, and soul. This was the case at Urban Café, nestled right off Troost in Kansas City—a culinary sanctuary where every bite speaks volumes and your taste buds are taken on a sensory journey you won’t soon forget.
From the moment you step inside, the ambiance envelopes you: dim, moody lighting wraps the space in a sultry elegance, while low-humming conversations and the rhythm of clinking cutlery set the tone for what can only be described as a sacred food affair. It’s intimate without being pretentious, soulful without needing to say it—and then the food arrives, and words begin to fail.
Let’s start with the mac and cheese, a so-called “side” that could easily headline its own menu. Rich, velvety, and unapologetically cheesy, this dish isn’t playing games. The cheese blend is luxurious, coating every tender noodle in a bold embrace that balances sharpness with comfort. It’s a hug in a bowl with just enough bite to remind you this isn’t your average mac—it’s elevated, seasoned, and deeply satisfying.
Then there’s the lump crab pasta, which is nothing short of divine. Delicate yet decadent, the sweetness of the crab sings through a sauce that is equal parts buttery and herbaceous. Each bite is a harmony of texture and taste—the freshness of the seafood juxtaposed with the comforting weight of the pasta. It doesn’t whisper; it sings.
Now enter the wings—oh, the wings.
The Piri Piri wings are a flavor bomb. Smoky, slightly citrusy, and infused with a heat that doesn’t bully but rather seduces the palate, these wings feel like a love letter from the Southern coast of Africa. Crispy skin gives way to juicy, tender meat and a marinade that feels like it was aged in secret. They command attention with each bite.
And then—prepare yourself—the Sticky Duck Wings arrive. Imagine a glaze so deep, so sweet-savory and intoxicating, that it clings to your fingers like a memory you don’t want to let go of. The duck is cooked to tender perfection, almost melting as it meets your tongue. It’s indulgent. It’s sensual. It’s unforgettable.
Dining at Urban Café is not about checking boxes or chasing trends—it’s about immersion. The plating is artful yet grounded. The service is attentive but never intrusive. And the flavors? They don’t just sit on your tongue; they linger in your thoughts long after the last bite.
This isn’t just a meal—it’s a moment. A journey. A declaration of culinary excellence right in the heart of Troost. Urban Café is where comfort meets craft, where every dish tells a story, and where your taste buds come alive in ways they never knew possible.
Final Verdict: If you haven’t tasted the mac. If you haven’t devoured the crab pasta. If you haven’t licked your fingers clean after those sticky duck wings—you haven’t lived. Go. Savor. Experience.

Read moreWe had a wonderful time at Urban! This new, upscaled location from the same chef who brought Urban Table is amazing. They offered a limited menu for the soft opening and it did not disappoint. We shared the lobster mac and cheese and it was full of succulent chunks of lobster and very creamy. We also shared the fried chicken. (It was a hard decision over the duck confit.) Hands-down this is the best fried chicken I've had in Kansas City, and in all of my travels around US and abroad. The seasoning on the exterior was perfect, as was the crusting, itself. It was very flaky and crispy and didn't completely fall off of the meat as it sometimes does. The chicken itself was very moist. It was a half chicken, so very filling! We enjoyed some cocktails alongside this.
This new location is on the corner, in a new building. It looks like there will be patio seating in the future. The entrance is semi-accessible, and although there's a couple of steps up to many of the tables, there is a ramp behind the bar for anyone who needs. The restrooms are very nice, both are unisex and have changing tables. I like that although it's a clean, modern design inside they have spent the dollars on comfortable seating. There is also seating at the bar, and some people ate from that location as well.
There is a dedicated parking lot next to the building as well as plenty of street parking around the building. The soft opening has limited hours but the permanent hours are posted, and it will be closed on Mondays. The menu will also expand as they test out items during this honeymoon period. The staff was very nice and the food was served in a...
Read moreWe were in the area for an event that fell through and were looking for something to do. We happened to stumble on this wonderful place and never have I been so lucky as that moment. Urban is no less than phenomenal. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and it feels fancy without worrying about being under dressed. We sat at the bar, and the staff that served us were so kind, personable, and knowledgeable! And then there was the food. I could go on for hours about the incredible food we were served. We started with a round of sticky duck wings which blew us out of the water with flavor. For an entree I got the crab pasta and my friend the shrimp and grits. When I tell you that I have never tasted anything as full of flavor and as decadent as these dishes, I assure you I'm not exaggerating. My pasta had some of the largest chunks of blue crab I have ever seen, and the perfect hint of spiciness sent my taste buds over the edge. My friend's shrimp and grits came topped with the most wonderful collared greens and I wish I could find the words to describe how amazing each meal was. I wanted to savor every bite, but I couldn't help myself from chowing down! I thought we had eaten the best of the best until we got to desert. There are so few places you can find bread pudding on the menu, let alone some that will send you straight to paradise. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, it would be that bread pudding.
tl:dr GO TO THIS RESTAURANT!!!! The most amazing food for a fantastic price, and you will find yourself swimming on cloud nine. I can't wait...
