I’m not a huge fan of going out to eat for breakfast or lunch. I prefer to save my dining out time for dinner, but there are always exceptions to my rule. I have noticed a trend with restaurants that are open for only breakfast and lunch and one of these trendy places is now open near my house. It’s First Watch, a restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and brunch.
The foods served at First Watch include the usual eggs, omelets, sandwiches, etc. but there is a special emphasis here on healthfulness. You can see and taste the difference that the healthy twist makes and many of the foods are quite tasty. For example, they have a French toast option that is covered with pieces of fruit rather than syrup. And if you order a sandwich, there is an option to include mixed greens on the side. This is much healthier than ordering a side of French fries or onion rings and as much as I love the taste of these traditional sides, it was nice to eat something healthier for a change.
With beverages, there is no alcohol sold at First Watch. They serve the common beverages such as coffee, milk, iced tea, orange juice, and so forth, but they also have some more interesting options to choose from. I like the Kale Tonic best. It is made with kale, Fuji apples, cucumber, and lemon and, once again, it is much healthier than the usual soft drink that so many of us order for lunch.
The inside of this First Watch location is larger than I expected, with seating for about 100 people. It is a calm, homey setting and I like that the kitchen is open to view from the guests. One thing I found a little different is that, when it comes time to pay, you have to walk with your check to the front of the restaurant and pay the cashier. The restaurant is full service in every way except this.
Healthy food options abound in a large metropolitan area such as Houston and First Watch is a good restaurant when you want a tasty meal with more of the good and less of the bad. Some of the food is a little pricey, but First Watch is still a good option when you’re in the mood for breakfast, lunch, or brunch and don’t mind the occasional healthy...
Read moreThis place has some kinks to work out, but it is very close!
My sister took me to First Watch last Saturday around noon because she said it was great. Although the place was very busy, there was still a booth and a couple tables open for us.
The menu is nearly overwhelming. I wanted everything on it because it all sounded so good. They have everything from avocado toast to blueberry pancakes.
We ordered their Million Dollar Bacon to start and both of their juices (I like how they bring your water out in a carafe). The juices were phenomenal but the bacon was burned in places...yuck. They go to the trouble of seasoning and sugaring their bacon and then they burn it? That's not good eats. My sister got the chile chorizo omelet, I got the Parma skillet, and between us we shared a giant blueberry pancake.
My sister surmised the omelet was nowhere as good as last time; they were skimpy with the ingredients.
However, on my end of the table, everything was totally solid. The Parma skillet has sausage, mushrooms, onion, tomatoes, and cheese with a sunny-side egg on top. It all comes together wonderfully.
Their toast is thick and hearty, although I think it could have been toasted more. Their jam is strawberry and I am not a fan of the seeds but it was good.
The pancake was fab-u-lous. We tore that thing UP. It comes with a compote that really elevates the flavor. Unfortunately, the maple syrup they use isn't anywhere near as dark or robust as the one I prefer to use at home.
Aside from the nitpicking, this place isn't the very best in my book, but it is definitely up there. And for $35 WITH TIP, we were two happy campers at the...
