Popped in on a sunny December Sunday around 3PM for an early dinner with my family. This place has been a Mexican restaurant for years, and apparently has recently changed owners or names (or maybe both). In any case, the vibe is still typical Mexican restaurant, the food is still delicious, the drinks still great, and the service still quick.
Upon arrival, complementary chips and salsa arrived at our table with glasses of water and a server took our drink orders. They also offered bean dip, which had some cheese on it. I'm not sure if this was complementary or not.
I can't remember what everyone else ordered, but I had the arroz con pollo with flour tortillas. It was delicious! super flavorful, and a massive portion with plenty of chicken.
I know it was a bit early in the day, but only one other person came in while we were there to dine in. I don't recall seeing anyone come in for pickup orders. Surprising for how good...
Read moreWe have never had a bad meal at Black Agave. Large portions, fun drinks, and a huge menu ensures there’s always something for everyone. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and the food is several steps above the runny lard filled beans and dry overpriced meat at other places, making dinner feel more like a family affair than “going out to eat”. The restaurant is tucked into downtown like a hidden gem away from the interstate or industrial areas. Hands down our favorite Mexican restaurant in the area.
We have also used Black Agave for catering. Mary and the crew were able to feed our entire group (and have leftovers!) and still come in under budget. Carne asada, rice, beans, two salsas, tortillas, and fajita veggies were ready exactly at the specified pick up time and guests were impressed by the quality.
I’d also recommend asking for their “spicy” off-menu salsa if you’re up to it. Perfect blend of flavor and...
Read moreI really wanted my experience to be better. They didn't tell my partner anything about pricing when they ordered over the phone, so I had a bit of sticker shock. I was happy to pay it with tip though because I want to support them. At the same time, the owners are great people who are friends of friends, so I really want them to succeed. The food leans more towards northern mexican/"tex mex" dishes like enchiladas and steaks, like their sister restaurant El Ranchero. Their food is very well made with quality ingredients, the meat is well marinated, and comes at a price that reflects that. When the restaurant can open for indoor dining I think the experience will be better, their dishes are really meant to be experienced there, in my opinion, and don't translate very well to takeout, much like the experience I had at Guadalajara ordering...
