I used to adore this store. A few of the cashiers know me by name and I have a good rapport with everyone who works there. It has a huge selection of fresh produce and dry goods for its size, not to mention my favorite flavor of GT's kombucha. I would make sure to stop in anytime I was nearby for a pick me up or a healthy treat. It used to be one of my happy places, and now when i think about it, it makes me sad.
On 7.27.25, I had difficulties finding a parking space because someone was double parked. They did a great job of announcing around the store the nake and model and color and plate number so someone could move their car. This I appreciated. I'm permanently disabled with a degenerative illness.
What I don't appreciate is the manager, Ariel, saying that they don't have (many) disabled customers when I asked why they don't have a handicap parking spot dedicated out front. When she said that, it felt like a punch in the gut. Not all disabilities that grant you a parking plackard are visible. Most of them aren't, and this obtuse view left me with a hole in my gut
These people know me. They see my cane. They've gotten things from me from upstairs before. They charged me a dollar for a peice of bread once because I had very low blood sugar and needed food but had little to no money. I'm a regular. People know my name. One cashier and I are always excited ro see each other because we can say "Hi, Liz!" to each other.
I think about stopping by, but the conversation i had with Ariel left a bad taste in my mouth. I've been going here since I was a literal child at 16 and im 28 now and only going to get worse physically. Ariel told me they had a spot out back by the dumpster where I could park when deliveries where being made. While I understand this is convenient for them, it is absolutely othering to me. A separate entrance isn't equal.
Maine is the first super aged state in the nation. Being disabled is the only minority you can join at any time for any reason. Your chanced of being disabled as you age only increase. The way Ariel handled this situation has left me anxious even to go back and the niggling feeling that I had to say something.
I miss feeling welcome here. Everything would change for me if they had dedicated handicap parking out front with the rest of the customers and walkable,...
