First the good. Food was fine. Got the garbage breakfast and it was good, can't say it was special or anything crazy but just good. As silly as it might sound the toast was amazing. Also, the service was nice and friendly. Now the negatives. We were surprised at the bill when it was $10 more than expected. When we arrived we were offered doggy bacon a couple of times. "Would your dog like some doggy bacon?" "Can we get you some doggy bacon?". Now every time we've been offered (key is 'offered') food for the dog at any restaurant it has always been no charge. He has gotten crazy things before so some bacon didn't seem that unusual. No it was $4 for two strips of bacon. Also the prices on their website don't match the menu prices. That'd be ok, but we didn't get menus so each plate was $2 more than what was online ($4). Also they charge an extra $1 per plate for eggs ($2). We were told there are signs and it's on the menu...we ate outside where there are no signs and again we got no menus. So that's a total of $10 extra dollars that were added in a way that felt a bit unscrupulous. Not sure if it was intentionally shady, but it definitely felt dirty. It's not the extra money itself, I get it, they have to make a profit. It's the not being upfront and even after recognizing we are outside and were not given menus doing nothing about it. But the dog bacon felt worse. If we had asked for bacon, then obviously would expect a cost. When it is offered up and with the extra "the owner loves dogs" too, that is implying it's complementary. If it had just been one issue maybe not a big deal, but it was three. The stuff at the end really soured the whole experience and I don't think we'd go back. You can get similar quality food for better prices in so many other restaurants....
Read moreToday was my second time at Franks Diner. My first experience was so good that I decided to bring my son. It was the worst experience I had ever had eating out. I was thoroughly embarrassed. The waitress, Morgan, did not identify herself. She took our order and 45 minutes after sitting there I asked about our order. In a snarky way, she said, "it's a 45-minute to an hour wait, your order will be coming soon." I asked a heavy-set man who the manager was and he said, "I'm the owner.' I asked for water which he gave us. When I started to tell him that the waitress was acting like she was angry he cut me off and said, "we're short staffed like all other businesses." and he just walked away as though we were bothering him. Two other waitresses who overheard the exchange came over to see if there was anything they could do. The owner who we found out was Kevin Ervin came over and looked at me and said your meal is on me. My son said we didn't come here for a free meal. We both lost our appetite so he had two plates to throw in the trash. My son and I have both worked for a large catering business where we served a couple of thousand people. We understand the demands of the service industry. My son owns his own business. I'm a retired court reporter. We were going to bring some friends to Franks Diner that are coming from New York. I would never expose them to such an unprofessional eatery. When we were leaving Kevin told my son, "it will be $14." My son said we had the same experience. He waved his hand at us and said, "just leave."
If the owner is irritable that might explain why he's short-staffed. When a fish is rotten it stinks from the head. If this is how he responds to customers, I shudder to think about how he...
