We LOVED this museum! We could have spent all day in the children's area alone. There's an adorable log cabin that's perfect for kids to play in. Inside the foam wooden logs are stuffed animals. My son is an animal fantastic and could not get enough of these. He also loved the animal figurines found in the drawers. They were organized so neatly by the type of animal. We made sure to try to put them all away organized as well. There were crystals, fossils, and more for children to have a hands on learning experience. My daughter had a blast building a cabin with the foam blocks. She also loved the water painting station and was so proud of her painting. After we reluctantly moved on from the children's area, we toured the whole museum. The kids loved the giant shark! The wooly mammoth was fascinating to them as well. (If you haven't noticed, theres a definite interest with animals and my children.) We went through the dinosaurs to the ice age and then to native Americans. While touring the wax figures and seeing native american tools, you can hear the most beautiful flute playing. Come to my surprise when we turned the corner and saw it was an actual woman playing the flute behind a glass sitting at what would've been an old trading store. She gave the kids pennies that we turned into souvenirs!!! How cool! I had to snap a photo of this Inuit mom carrying her baby from the Inuit art displays. The next things that stood out to us were the stuffed animal room, we spent the most amount of time here from the actual museum. Lastly, the crystal wall at the very end blew me away!! I was stunned by the rare collection they had. We looked around the gift shop and the prices were extremely reasonable. Next time we visit, I'm grabbing some Christmas gifts from here!!! Overall, its a free museum that accepts donations. If you have younger children, this is the place to be. Come learn and support this...
Read moreIt's very understandable why they wouldn't allow food and beverages (unless sealed) beyond their displays. HOWEVER, staff made our family very uncomfortable while arguing about their exact policy amungst each other, specifically, about a flipping water bottle. After witnessing a very discouraging debate, we were allowed to proceed with a sealed beverage. About an hour had passed after seeing all the different displays, we were again harassed and reminded that no food or beverages were allowed beyond a certain point by the same woman. We were very uncomfortable by the situation being brought to our attention yet again. We were very understanding, respectful, and apologized for any inconveniences from the very beginning! But this was a very persistent older woman near the donation box that made me personally feel that she thought we were abusive of the facility and it's regulations. We just wanted to have a good time and it seemed that was impossible by being continuously reminded and harassed. See to it that this woman is pulled aside for the way she speaks with people. We were genuinely unaware and didn't deserve to be...
Read moreThere are THREE museums that are part of the system: Dinosaur, Natural History & Civil War. The latter two being right next to one another. These are all hidden gems filled with outstanding exhibits & housed in state-of-the-art award winning buildings. Their biggest challenge is location, which is along the lake shore in a beautiful setting with unobstructed views to the east. No one seems to know about these places except the school district!! To get there one has to travel through town about 20 minutes from I-94 (very inconvenient for some) but it's worth it. The collections of objects, displays & educational programs for both youths & adults is fabulous...& admission is free! Anyone looking to spend some fun time any day of the week should give this museum a visit. You can look up everything on their website. Bring a friend! You'll be pleasantly surprised & glad you made the trip to a top shelf modern & clean establishment, right next door to the Civil War Museum. Treat yourself,...
