Went there for Fathers Day. Had 4 generations there around 6:00pm, we have went there before and it was..ok.. It was not overly busy, steady but the restaurant was about half full. The following was our experience: I ordered a Pepsi and was given diet Pepsi, when I said it wasn't regular Pepsi the waiter told me that it was regular Pepsi. He begrudgingly did bring me another one that was Pepsi, my moms diet Pepsi was off as well, we later overheard the wait staff discussing that their co2 was having issues. My kid who is 5 ordered chocolate milk , and said that it tasted funny. I tasted it expecting that it would be a light chocolate instead of thick like Nestle quick, nope the milk was spoiled and warm (the temperature couldnt have been below 60 degrees). We informed the waiter of this and he said I can get you another chocolate milk, we insisted on just water He returned and said that they couldnt find the milk that was served to us, this concerned me because it was either a lie and they discarded it knowing they messed up and left it out or served it was past an acceptable date, or they really couldnt find it and some other poor unsuspecting soul would suffer the same fate as I did. After we got the drinks sorted out and ordered it was about 45 minutes later that we were informed that my kids order of mac and cheese could not be filled, and they were out. This did not sit well with a 5 year old, it should have been told to us much sooner that they couldnt fulfill the order. He ended up with chicken nuggets that he didn't like. My aunt asked about getting the bread that they normally bring to the table shortly after arrival about a half hour into our experience to which the waiter replied, I case you didn't notice, we are a little busy. I will not be eating at this place any more. They handled every situation quite poorly from a customer...
Read moreIn-cred-i-ble! What a great place to have dinner before a big day in the area the next day. We stayed the night in Keokuk and decided to try dinner here at the Hawkeye. We were not disappointed. I remember when the Hawkeye was in downtown Keokuk in the old hotel, but that probably goes back three decades after I landed in southeast Iowa. The new location on the north side is surrounded by retail and industry, so that's the only real detractor for atmosphere. Let's go back to the important part -- the food. We both ordered filet mignon and it was one of the best cuts with great flavor. The mushroom soup was the best I have ever had -- nice pieces of mushroom. Oh, and the baked beans! We usually don't order something like that with a filet, but something told us to try it. They were delicious. You just can't eat all of this either! Next time, we'll order the 10-ounce filet instead of two 6-ounce filets and share the sides. It would have been more than enough for us. But wait ... there's more! The breadsticks served before your meal absolutely melt in your mouth. We have never experienced anything like this before. The breadsticks are served hot with creamery butter. The breadsticks themselves were a taste experience. Keokuk has it good with the Hawkeye and it's a true local treasure. We live 90 minutes away, but we're going to find a reason to return to delight in this once again. Great job, Hawkeye. We...
Read more1st time here. Many locals highly recommended it. The 10 Oz filet was cooked to perfection, other entrée was seafood sampler which had grilled salmon, & bacon wrapped shrimp & scallops - they were excellent - the salmon was on the overcooked side as it was a little dry rather than melt in your mouth tender. I know it's possible to grill salmon & still be super tender but is easy to overcook. Wild rice pilaf was very good, baked potatoes piping hot, hash browns nicely browned as they should be. Lots of leftovers as there was so much food! Salad bar was good with nice variety & tasty cheddar cheese spread to go with crackers. We arrived about 4:30pm and some of the lettuce on top of lettuce bowl on the salad bar was a little wilted and could have been refreshed for evening guests arriving. The hot mini bread loaves were delicious and wait staff was super. (Friendly & attentive) I mentioned the salmon because we were asked on the way out by a manager about our satisfaction & I received a sincere apology, nothing more. I did not mention salmon to wait staff when they asked as it was still edible, just not done perfectly. Still, I give it 5 stars because the slight imperfections of a couple of items wasn't enough to knock a whole star off. Would definitely go again before...
