Stunningly mediocre. That's really the only way I can describe the food at this beloved establishment. Shockingly bland. In the caprese with heirloom tomatoes they clearly refrigerated the tomatoes, ruining the texture. The "grilled king salmon" seemed as if the fish had been pre-poached and then slapped on a grill for a few marks. There was no crust, there was no tender interior. The little gem wedge was underdressed yet over-showered with pre-fried shallots (why?). Even the roast beef - what on earth is a "Captain's Reserve"?! - was flavorless. Perfectly cooked, tender, and so flavorless it was as if the kitchen had been advised that every single potential customer had a blood pressure issue. In fact, their dramatic aversion to the mildest use of salt was evident in almost every dish - thank goodness they put a shaker on the table! Even the popovers with honey-butter - which they claim they are just like Warm Spring's Ranch! - are a sad little saucer of karo syrup with a whisp of undersalted butter. The cold-inside popovers practically defiled the memory of that beloved dish. I can only guess that this restaurant gets such good reviews because 1: The garden is lovely. 2: The servers are prompt and friendly, and most importantly 3: the bar serves drinks the size of swimming pools. Wine was poured within an inch of the rim. A negroni on a big rock was, instead, a tub of liquor in which said rock enjoyed a quickly melting spa day. I am shocked the valets let anyone drive home! If fast service and ginormous drinks were my measures of a restaurant, I would also like The Grill at Knob Hill. But I like flavorful food, so alas, I was deeply...
Read moreWe went to The Grill at Knob Hill to support a local business in our community during COVID. Everything was good up until the end of the night when patrons started leaving and the table behind ours turned into the breakroom for the manager and servers. The manager was doing the schedule and had 2 different servers let her know they couldn’t work certain hours, the manager took off her shoes and changed into a different pair, and she even brought in all her ski gear and laid it on the ground. At one point there were 6 members of the staff sitting behind us talking about tables they had over the course of the night and how the bottles of wine were expensive. Our table of 3 was appalled at the fact that we were listening to the staff talk poorly about guests and at one point trying on a fur vest someone had left from a previous night. When I asked if she was the manager she informed me yes. I let her know how disrespectful they were being and how it was not a great experience for us to have had to listen to all of that while we were enjoying a nice meal out. She argued with me and said they had no place to go. Note to management, don’t argue with a guest about their experience in your restaurant. If you truly have no other place to give your staff a break then please train them to keep their voices down, don’t talk poorly of guests, and please don’t change their shoes while 4 feet away from a table...
Read moreWe came as a large group of 8 on a busy Friday night with a reservation. They were excellent at seating us right away and serving. We really enjoyed the lamb chop starter, calamari and caprese salad. We tried the broiled shrimp and it was a bit over done/hard to eat out of the shell so I would not recommend that. Be sure to enjoy those complimentary and just fantastic popovers style rolls! They kept disappearing along with their fresh butter. We started with such heavy appetizers but somehow we didn't stop there. We enjoyed the risotto and wienerschnitzel. I loved the cabbage! My party really enjoyed their fried chicken and salmon as well. For dessert we tried a berry dish and creme brulee, both were fine. Best of all was their huckleberry mocktail mule! It was so deliciously slightly sweet and spicy from that ginger beer. I'll be back just for that! I enjoyed having a large round table for our group because conversation could flow easily. Parking is valet or hard to find unless you cross the street. I loved their branch lighting and comfortable atmosphere. It was a perfect spot for good night on the town in a large...
