Yes...I just gave this place 5 Stars...and it has earned each and every one of those stars.
Now, you may be thinking "Well, Tony, maybe it's 5 Stars considering the plethora of mediocre food choices around the Harker Heights/Killeen area." Well, yes...you could indeed make a strong argument to that point, but as far as old school diners go, this place is pretty frakking solid.
First plus...open 24 hours! Second positive...breakfast ALL DAY! Third reason to love it...they actually do make most of the items in house!
I've only been for lunches so far, but aspire to go for breakfast and dinner at some point. Service is fantastic. From the very first visit, I felt like I've been going there for years. They treat new customers the same way they treat their regulars (of which there are plenty), with sassy efficiency!
They have daily specials (breakfast lunch and dinner), AYCE catfish Tuesdays and Fridays and AYCE steak Wednesdays and Saturdays. The menu is extensive and varied. Prices are extremely affordable and the portions are generous.
I won't go through everything I have had there, but I have never had anything disappoint me. A few highlights for me are the Hammer Sandwich (sliced turkey, ham, roast beef, american cheese, swiss cheese, and all the trimmings and house dressing, served hot!). This sandwich had me making yum yum noises every bite! The BLT (they say overloaded with bacon) is indeed overloaded with bacon. This sandwich should be served with a Lipitor chaser. The onion rings, hand breaded and fried to golden perfection. The onions are thick cut and don't fall out with each bite...the sign of a well made onion ring!
Omelettes, burgers, skillets, meatloaf etc etc...true diner fare at its best. Passing through, just moved here, haven't been in a while...doesn't matter. Just don't miss out...
Read moreOh how love places like this. It's one of those little mom and pop style dinners. A little bit of Americana that still exist. The type with wood paneling on the walls still. Note, I don't remember it actually having wood paneling.
So, some friends and I stopped in for breakfast. A good ole cup of Joe, in a real ceramic white coffee cup. Food order took a few minutes to get taken, but, it was a Sunday, right around end of church time, start of pro football games (they had TVs on), and we did through an 8 top on em. So, I don't fault them at all as slammed as they were. Back to my point, got my Cup O Joe, ordered my food, and took my coffee outside to smoke. Came to food coming out, so, the kitchen was extremely quick as many people as they had.
I got a kitchen sink skillet. Eggs, half a dozen meats, jalapeños on hash browns cheese on all that and I got a side of sausage gravy to pour over the whole mess. Came with a couple slices of toast too.
I always get a water to eat with. Coffee is special to me, an should be enjoyed without food. So, my water was never empty, nor was my coffee. That's important, again especially not having an empty table in the place.
Now, I'm a biggo boy. 76 inches tall and 300 pounds, and I didn't eat it all. I ate most of the skillet, more than I should, because it was so damn good. I never touched the toast because, well, I was stuffed. Total with the gravy, coffee and meal was like 16 bucks or something. 18 something with tax, and seriously, the wife and I could have split that had she...
Read moreOur waitress was HORRIBLE. She served ice tea that was HOT with no ice in it. We had to find her to get refills. She stood around with another server looking at a cell phone.
I asked her if the chicken tenders were frozen items, and she said NO. They came out and every single one was a processed frozen tender & you could tell with your own eyes that they were what she said they weren't!!! Because they were all identical!!
She served a small bowl of white gravy and provided NO spoon & it took 10 minutes to get her to come back to our table to get a spoon!
I work in the public, and I provide all the service I can.
That server should never work again in the public unless this establishment is willing to train their servers and send in secret shoppers.
I like to tip in cash, and this server was lucky that I was with someone because that's the only reason she received any gratuity.
Hot drinks that are supposed to be cold and silverware that has to be hunted down and the truth about the food on the menu should be training for a beginner at the least.
If you want to wait another 15 minutes for your check - then this is the best place for you not to matter and to waste your time.
Sorry, I have written many reviews, and I hate to ding an entire establishment over one server - but her ineptitude and lack of service starts at the top.
Hallmark you need to do better for me to...
