A friend told me "Letterman's is the best breakfast in PA". I live about 40min North and don't typically find myself in Kutztown but went with a friend to give it a try. Well, this place was definitely worth the drive. It's a cozy little nook on the corner of Main St. and upon entering, I quickly realized this was the kind of diner I had been searching for. In a post-pandemic world, craving some semblance of normalcy (and not the "New" kind either), Letterman's delivers! It was so refreshing. I could see faces, all of them smiling. The kitchen is an open concept and you can see Doug, a master at his craft, hard at work building dishes of epic proportions with the freshest of ingredients. A heavenly breakfast bouquet of waffles, bacon, and eggs, etc. permeates heavily in the air. Liz, who took our order, was friendly and checked in often to make sure we had everything we needed. For that brief moment in time, truly, all felt well with the world. The hardest part was figuring out what to order since the menu is full of creative and classic options. I went with the "Alayna Omelette", stuffed with steak meat, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and pepper jack cheese. It was awesome! And huge. I'm typically a member of the Clean Plate Club and try as I might, I had to box the leftovers... the first time in years that a breakfast was able to conquer this stomach. Letterman's has a very down-to-earth vibe and will make anyone who longs for a fear-free environment feel right at home. They offer more than just heaping amounts of delicious, high quality breakfast foods (for a great price, I might add)...This is an American Dream in action; a place where you can feel free to relax and enjoy life again. I will...
Read moreHow have I not been here? We were seated one of the two person tables that line the left/east wall with the counter running along the right. A photo on the wall above our table showed the building being delivered. LoL. We arrived at noon on Sunday and were felt lucky to be immediately seated. Our waitress was great. I ordered from the daily specials and had the Maine Omlete: lobster & crab (in abundance), along with sweet potatoes and toasted sourdough bread. My companion ordered apple fritters and they came first, as an appetizer. The food did take a while (duh, Sunday noon, the place was packed!) but we didn’t notice with the great coffee and breaded apple slices topped with something visually interesting (...but I can’t remember—cinnamon? Powdered sugar?) We had a nice chat and even talked with a nice couple at the counter who turned around to check out the Stuffed Hash Browns. The coffee and water were refilled as neede without our asking, the check came at an appropriate interval and to-go boxes were suggested for the abundant portions (it made an ample dinner that night). This was a delightful contrast to the corporate sameness of chain restaurants and manicured strip mall...
Read moreThis little diner serves up big food. We read it was rated the best breakfast in Berks county, at it really lives up to the claim.
The atmosphere is that of a run down, old school diner / dive in a row house. It truly belongs on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. The tables are for two, but our party of four sat at the counter.
As a southern transplant to the north, I constantly critique sausage gravy anytime I see it on a menu. It almost always disappoints, fails the taste test, but not this time. Letterman's sausage gravy reminded me of my mother and grandmother's family sausage gravy we had multiple times a week. It was five stars, a home run, hands down. It's worth a trip to Letterman's just for the sausage gravy, but it's just the tip of the iceberg.
We had the smokey omelet, the cheese steak omelet and a grilled cheese with bacon sandwich. All were loaded with meat, seriously there was easily over a pound of meat in each omelet.
The grilled cheese with bacon was big with four big slices of perfectly cooked bacon.
Everything was simply delicious and extremely well made. The chef is a...
