4.5/5 A Slice of Germany: Continental Delicatessen's Liverwurst Sandwich in La Habra
Tucked away at 1510 W Imperial Hwy in La Habra, Continental Delicatessen has been a family-owned gem since 1963, dishing out authentic German flavors that transport you straight to Bavaria. On a recent lunch run, I zeroed in on their fresh liverwurst sandwich on a French roll—a $12.75 steal that punches way above its weight.
The star is the liverwurst itself: creamy, soft, and impossibly smooth, with a rich, savory depth from pork liver blended with spices that whisper of old-world tradition. It's not gamey or overpowering—just pure, velvety indulgence that spreads effortlessly. Layered with crisp lettuce, ripe tomato slices, and a whisper of mayo on a crusty-yet-yielding French roll, it strikes the perfect balance of textures: the bread's golden exterior cracks satisfyingly, while the interior soaks up every juicy bite without sogginess. At first nibble, the mild earthiness blooms, evolving into a comforting, almost nostalgic warmth that's fresh-made daily.
Pair it with their legendary potato salad—shredded, tangy, and addictive—for the full effect, but it's not my flavor profile. I wish the German chocolate cake was better.
The vibe? Cozy and unpretentious, with quick service from the friendly Monica and shelves stocked with imported jars of sauerkraut and mustards.
In a world of fast-food fades, this sandwich is a tasty reminder of why delis endure. If you're craving something hearty yet refined, Continental delivers—soft, satisfying, and utterly craveable....
Read moreContinental is easily my favorite place in the area to sit down for a German meal , and to do some shopping afterwards for supplies to take home. Prices are competitive, quality and service are outstanding.
The deli sandwiches are generously made, and with fresh meats, cheeses, and produce, and all in the right proportions. Hot dishes are also excellent, with the leberkäse and the knackwurst being personal favorites. The family enjoys the schnitzel and the frankfurters. The potato salad and sauerkraut are both delicious.
Perhaps my favorite part is that Continental is a bonafide family owned and operated business. I am happy to spend my money here and will continue to do so. Whether grabbing sandwiches to go, buying fresh bread and cold cuts, or sitting down to a hot meal, Continental gets my highest...
Read moreI don't live in the area so I can't say what other places may be near by but I wouldn't expect to find any better than Continental Deli. In this time of corporate chains dominating the restaurant landscape, it's such a nice surprise to find a family owned business like this. Order from the menu that offers options you won't find at subway. There is a pastry case and of course the deli case too. A small market area offers many German staples. The staff I encountered were friendly and helped me order like i was a long time customer. My sandwich was made to order and delicious. I usually don't care for potato salad but i guess their's is a reason to come here by itself, I finished it all, that's a only time in life deal right there. I can't say enough about how happy I was to have stopped here, ...
