I don't understand why this place has received rave reviews on here. This place is marginal at best. My wife and I went there last night and it was a weird experience. This is not a sit down restaurant. You place your order at a counter. You have to pick from a very limited and overpriced menu. I order the soulvaki dinned plate for $16.95. It consisted of 4 pieces of dried overcooked pork and shriveled over grilled vegetables. It came with rice, but the rice was smothered in this weird unidentifiable brown sauce that had little to no flavor. The plate came with a salad that tasted like it had oil and vinegar and dried oregano sprinkled on it. The pork also had the oregano on it. Apparently that is the only spice they used. I also received a small cup of tzatziki yogurt sauce. It was obvious that it was made with cheap "great value" type yogurt. The service was horrible. We just had water to drink. The gave us this huge tray to carry our two little bitty styrofoam cups of water. They never came to our table to check if we needed anything. We had to go back up to the counter to get refills. The staff all had these grim faces and seemed annoyed that we were there. The food took 20 minutes to arrive and my dinner plate and my wife's gyro were not even worth the wait or the $$.
Also, this is NOT "authentic Greek food". This is some weird facsimile of Greek food. I've been to a lot of Greek restaurants and trust me people, this place is not good. Steer clear...
Read moreThere was some confusion while placing my order. The guy behind the counter (who was nice enough anyway) kept saying "side salad," and I wasn't sure if he understood that I wanted the salad that came with my meal (you get choice of soup or salad), or if he thought I wanted a salad in addition to everything. He also misheard me when I said "Large Diet" and gave me a large Mountain Dew.
The salad was pretty good! I might have appreciated more feta on it, but I am a big feta person.
The pastichio was not to my liking, and I left most of it untouched. I really wanted Greek Chicken to begin with, but they were out of the potatoes that come with it so I went with something completely different. I was afraid I might be disappointed, and I was.
The pita bread with tzatziki sauce was good.
The baklava was really good.
I am not from Lafayette and this was my first visit to the Acropolis. I was somewhat disappointed on walking in to see that it is really just kind of a glorified King Gyros.
If I am ever that way again, I might come back to try the Greek Chicken.
One last note to everyone reading this: It's pronounced "Yee-Roh," NOT "GUY-Roh" or "JEYE-Roh." Listen to how the people working behind the counter say it, and then say it the same way. It's...
Read morePerhaps I dropped in on an off day. For carry out I selected the Moussaka and Gyros. I have made Moussaka for many years having been in Greece, and this was not authentic. No hint of the spices and cinnamon that make it so great. Top besamel sauce was flat. It was loaded with potatoes and soaked in tomato sauce. In my grade book hardly a C maybe even a D. The Gyros was lacking that great sauce. So it was dry. I had asked for extra sauce but none was included. Not being in the restaurant I could not ask for the sauce which may have helped the overall taste. Lamb was at a minimum in both dishes if at all. Unfortunately for this area, good restaurants with Greek and Mediterranean cuisines are lacking. The other Greek establishment is also lacking in really good, authentic food. I'll wait until I go to Chicago. But I shall not return to...
