I've passed Christo's hundreds of times on my way down Teal, and never gave it a second look. It's almost hidden and understated location never caught my attention as anything but perhaps a local pub, or another simple diner. I could not have been more wrong. The interior is relaxed, yet elegant. They combine the ambiance of high end dining with a casual diner atmosphere and make it work. Beautiful prints ranging from art decor to art nouveau adorn the walls along with wooden decor that looks as if it was taken from Grandma's farmhouse. The lighting is bright and cheerful, the tables have a polished shine, and wall to wall carpet makes you feel as if you've been asked to sit in the executive lunchroom. The wait staff is efficient and happy, and make themselves available without being overbearing or intrusive. Then, there's the food. The menu is simple and comforting, yet with just enough outside the average fair to be interesting. My wife chose a chicken pita with cucumber sauce. It was fresh, delicious, and the portion size was far more than one would expect. That she actually finished it is a testament to the amazing quality of the food. I chose the Reuben after much deliberation. In my experience, Hoosiers don't have much success with this sandwich. But I'm always willing to give it another shot, as it is one of my favorites. Christo's Reuben is simply the best I've had since leaving the east coast. The corned beef was juicy and tender, perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sauerkraut and melted swiss. At last!!! Finally, the prices were far, FAR lower than the ambiance and menu choices would have you guess. I expected the bill to be twice what I paid! All in all, Christo's New City Grill is an absolute must-stop restaurant. I cannot wait to come back...
Read moreWe had a party of 9 - 7 adults and 2 kids under 5. We arrived at 1220 pm today, Sunday. There is not call ahead seating before 3pm on Sundays. We were told it would be 20 minutes. 45 minutes later we were still waiting. A party of 7 came 10 minutes before we were seated, they were seated right away. We asked the male manager how much longer. He said we needed to be patient. I commented about the party of 7 that was seated before us. I was told that there is a big difference between a party of 7 and 9. In the next room, we could see 3 - 4 top tables open. These could have been joined together for our party. Once seated we ordered right away. It took 30 minutes for our 1 appetizer to arrive. That was only after we asked the manager about it. When we asked about our food, our server told us that they kitchen had just started our order. And that with the number of parties, it was behind. That was 30 minutes after placing our orders.
The party of 7 that was seated before us, had eaten and left before we got our food. 50 minutes after ordering we got our food. We ordered sandwiches, 2 kids meals, a waffle and liver & onions. The rudness of the male manager, the endless excuses and the time it took to be served is not acceptable. No one offered an apology for our experience. The food was ok, once it arrived.
If a restaurant can't handle a Sunday lunch rush, or treat their customers respectfully, then they need better management.
We will definitely not be returning. And will not recommend this place to our...
Read moreWe decided to try this place yesterday (Saturday) and it was not very busy at the time. We started by ordering the Fried Green Beans and Smothered Waffle Fries. Both appetizers were pretty good.
For the main course my daughter had the Fettuccine Alfredo, she didn't finish it due to the appetizers but she said it was good. My mom ordered the Smokey Mountain Chicken and it was good, but I feel the chicken should have had a better sear on it so it's a bit crispy when biting into it with the bacon, green onion, potatoes, and cheddar cheese. As it came, it was a bit mushy which is why I feel it could have been cooked a little more.
My burger Western BBQ with Bacon was good. I asked for it well done, it was a little dry even with BBQ sauce, so I requested a side of mayo as well. If you didn't know BBQ and Mayo go well together you should try it. I would have liked it to be well done but juicy, but it was still a good burger nonetheless.
The highlight of this meal was definitely my girlfriend's Blackened Red Salmon, it was fantastic and I recommend this dish to anyone. I unfortunately was so full I did not get to try any of their delicious pies, but upon return I would definitely be trying some of the desserts.
Our service was also very pleasant as our server was very attentive, even though my mom did ask a few questions and it took me asking for mayo twice to get it. He was still very pleasant and never let us run out of drinks.
