Every year for the lunar new year's eve we meet with my parents, sister's family, and a ton of friends at Chinatown SF to celebrate and light off firecrackers. This year we had plans to do the same thing, but found ourselves in the hospital instead. Our family lost a very special person on the morning of the Lunar New Year and we were all exhausted from days of sadness - nobody had eaten a thing.
After hours of planning at a Oakmont Memorial Park, 9 of us met at Uncle Yu's around dinner time, and found a full house! We asked for a tale for 9, and they asked if we had a reservation. Ohhhh yeah, the New Year! We luckily were sat at the only open table within minutes and began hungrily staring at their menu.
Before long, chow mein, chow fun, steamed rice, honey walnut prawns, Mongolian chicken, peking chicken, garlic prawns, orange chicken and a couple other dishes... found their way to our table. We finished almost every plate - all sharing and taking turns eating through our tears.
The food was outstanding. Service was great too - especially for how full they were that night. I wish we'd gathered there to celebrate the New Year, but regardless, it was...
Read moreThe ONLY reason I give a one star review is because of the restaurant's policy of accepting reservations for 4 or more people. My family has supported Uncle Yu's since it opened in Lafayette and continued curbside service during the pandemic. My father who lives in Rossmoor can FINALLY go to one of his favorite places with his girlfriend yet he's told he can wait for a table. Not many folks who are 90 can sit around and wait for a table. Uncle Yu's is a large enough place and has accepted reservations for couples in the past. It's a rather sad policy and obviously makes couples who want to dine in the restaurant feel unwelcome. Shame on you Uncle Yu's. I tried, in vain, to get my dad to stop frequenting your establishment, however, he insists on continuing supporting Uncle Yu's and will be ordering curbside. Please consider welcoming couples with reservations back into your establishment. UPDATED REVIEW I raised the review to 5 star as the owner reached out and offered a fantastic solution for our family. We've always loved the food and appreciate the owners...
Read moreI've been coming to Uncle Yu's for many years and often times the staff lacks good customer service, including the woman in the front who answers the phone to take food orders.
Just the other day, I asked for soy sauce because I have not been getting any in my last 2 take out orders. I got shamed, questioned, and blamed over mentioning the lack of soy sauce I've not been receiving. She even shamed me for a 2nd time when I arrived to pick up my food regarding soy sauce. I really don't appreciate being treated disrespectfully as a customer and especially as a regular customer.
To make my experience even more memorable, my entire salad contained all rotten pieces of lettuce and had hair in it. I ended up throwing my salad in the garage.
Last but not least, please stop asking your customers if they want to tip the kitchen staff on "take out" orders . It's tacky and low class to ask. We are past Covid times and people will tip if they choose to on take out orders. No need to...
