Have had problems multiple times at American Kitchen where something was seriously wrong with something about my dish, ruining the experience and conversation with friends, but waitress failed to fix it. 5 months ago I had a breakfast plate and the potatoes were extremely undercooked and not edible. When I told the waitress and showed her how undercooked the potatoes were, she said she was sorry, and next time she would give free drinks. I let that experience slide, and when I came back the waitress followed up on her word giving me and my boyfriend free drinks, everything seemed fine...
Tonight I ordered a ($28) steak while at dinner with my family I ordered medium-rare* (extra rare). When I got my steak it was completely overcooked, with barely the slightest pink coloring in the thickest part of the steak. I let the *new waitress know, asked for a new steak, but instead she came back (5 minutes later) with my now cold steak, saying it was her fault, but that was the "last steak" and the kitchen wouldn't be able to make another one. She then put it back in front of me and walked away before I could ask her to please bring me another dish. Feeling the pressure from my family staring at me, trying to figure out how to react, I tried my best to eat the overcooked steak, but the texture and taste was HORRIBLE. About 5 minutes later I had to leave because I was starting to get very nauseous and I was on the verge of tears because of how rude the waitress was, and how this experience completely ruined a nice evening. :(
Family just got home and let me know the waitress charged full price for the steak, and tried to offer them a free desert. Family was completely off-put by the experience and said they didn't a desert, but to please discount the credit thereof. She said no, but said to "come back again" and she would give them a free dish or something?!
Trust me, if you want to get edible food, a pleasant dining experience, and waitresses that actually give a %*@&, go...
Read moreI went to this location twice. The first time, I ordered, via phone, 3 breakfast burritos. After getting home and looking in the bag, I only received 2 burritos. I called the owner who offered to make me a third or to refund my money. I opted to get a refund.
The second time, I took my mother and one other to American Kitchen for breakfast. We sat in a booth and our server was great and very nice. However, my mother ordered and item that came with two eggs over tomato sauce cooked in the oven. When the meal arrived, the eggs were under cooked to my mother's liking (she was never asked how she liked them cooked). We spoke to the server and asked if they could cook the eggs longer (i.e. throw it back in the oven) and the server graciously took away the eggs.
A minute later, she arrived back at our table and told us that due to the eggs being on top of the tomato sauce, they could not cook them any more. We said that was fine and would like to exchange it for another item and proceeded to order our new item. The server left, then came back, again, a minute later and said that we were responsible for paying for the item that we did not want (the tomato sauce and egg meal) and it was not their fault that the eggs were not cooked to her liking.
I have never had a restaurant tell me that I cannot send something back because it is under cooked or not to my liking. I was taken back at the fact that we had to pay for a meal that we did not eat (it was not even touched) and then also had to pay for another meal if we wanted a replacement (we opted to not have a replacement meal ordered). This is disappointing because the food is good, but I will not reward a place for providing bad service and forcing us to pay for a meal that we did not eat. On top of that, the manager did not come speak to us, it was the server who was responsible for relaying all the "bad" news.
I will not be going back due to both times I have gone, something...
Read moreReview for Millie’s American Kitchen (A Warning for People of Color)
My visit to Millie’s American Kitchen left me with mixed feelings and concerns that I want others to be aware of. As a party of one, I stood at the door for 10 minutes without being greeted. The older tall gentleman at the counter (possibly the owner) was distracted by his phone and laptop, failing to acknowledge me until much later. After seating myself, I was told to put my name on a list—something that felt unnecessary considering the restaurant was empty with plenty of seats available. I couldn’t help but notice that other customers, who were white, were not asked to sign in or wait, which made me question if my treatment was influenced by my darker complexion.
Once seated, however, my experience improved. I was greeted by a wonderful lady server wearing a pink hat who was warm, attentive, and professional. She handled my complaint about lukewarm potatoes well and promptly offered to bring me fresh, hot ones. I appreciated her effort, and the food overall was delicious. However, the experience took an odd turn when I ordered a coffee cake. The staff appeared to "overcompensate" by comping my order, which felt awkward and forced, as if it were an attempt to make up for the earlier treatment.
To make matters worse, there was a dog (supposedly a service dog) walking around inside the restaurant, which seems like a health violation.
While the food and the service from the lady server were the saving graces of the visit, the overall treatment and the unclear response to my concerns were troubling. Everyone deserves to feel equally welcomed and valued, regardless of their appearance.
2.5/5 stars. The food and server were great, but the experience was overshadowed by inconsistent treatment by owner and discomfort over how the situation was handled. People of color should be aware of the unequal treatment I...
