According to Lake Charles locals, Darrell’s is known for having the best poboys in town. So naturally, when my sister came in from Dallas, we wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, what we experienced was some of the worst service I’ve encountered in a long time. From the moment we walked in, there was no greeting. The host casually told us to sit wherever we’d like—no problem at first. But then, a family came in right behind us, and that same host personally walked them to a table. WOW!
Our server approached us with a blunt, “What are y’all drinking?” No greeting, no warmth—just straight to business in the most unwelcoming way. I asked her name, and she responded rudely that she “doesn’t tell people her name,” before finally saying it. When I pointed out how unprofessional and cold that came across, her attitude only worsened. She then went to get the manager, Tyler.
Tyler came over with the same dismissive energy—looking at us like we were a problem instead of customers expressing valid concerns. Rather than apologize or try to de-escalate, he defended the server by saying, “At least she came and spoke.” He even added that sometimes they get “creeps” in there. Excuse me? So now we’re being grouped into that? We felt completely disrespected and singled out.
Whether they want to say it or not, the vibe we got felt very discriminatory. I’ve visited before and noticed it, but this time was just flat-out blatant. The energy was clear: our business wasn’t valued, and we weren’t welcome. Food might be what draws people in—but respect and fair treatment are what keep them coming back. Sadly, I won’t...
Read moreI don't know where to begin. Great sandwich, terrible customer service. Rude with attitude unbecoming of any restautant my family cares to patronize.
Firstly, the phone is always busy. Very difficult to get anyone on the phone to place an order. So we ordered a very big order on Doordash (over $100), expecting we would have an option to notate our order needed to be packed for travel. We did not see that option and saw that our order was confirmed. Fortunately, (we thought) we were able to get them by phone, within a minute or two of order confimation. When we aksed if we could have the order packed for travel, they said no, that the order for 6 sandwiches had already been prepared.
We placed the order at 11:07, and had them on the phone at 11:08 with our request. 11:09 an email confirmation that order was received.
Pick up time scheduled for 11:45 to 11:50.
Our call at 11:08, they told us the order was already complete and they could not pack it for travel.
We went as far as to drive to the restaurant and attempt to reason with them. The owner/manager refused to do anything to make it right, claiming that 36 years in business that they are not worried about an unhappy customer.
We won't ever go back, despite the fact we have supported their small businees for many years, prayed they survive hurricaine Laura and other tragic events in the area.
The attitude we received from management was so disheartening, like a stab in the back from an old friend.
Farewell. Your sandwich is good, but...
Read moreAfter a long day, my companions and I sought out a Louisiana-style sandwich, the kind with bold flavor and proper craftsmanship. We arrived close to 10 p.m. and were immediately struck by the crowd. The parking lot was surprisingly full for that late hour—a testament, perhaps, to the reputation of the place.
Inside, the atmosphere leaned more toward bar than sandwich shop. Live music filled the room, and the guitarist possessed undeniable talent both vocally and instrumentally. Unfortunately, the volume was overwhelming, reducing what could have been a memorable performance to background noise too loud to appreciate.
Because of this, we asked our waitress if we could switch to a take-out order. Her response was less than gracious, pointing us curtly toward the bar just a few feet behind us. With a little coaxing she did process the order, but her demeanor made it clear we were an inconvenience.
Then came the redemption: the sandwich. It was, in a word, exceptional. The shrimp were buttery, tender, and cooked with precision. The bread was fresh, perfectly toasted, and substantial enough to hold the generous filling without overpowering it. Every bite was balanced, rich, and deeply satisfying—the kind of sandwich that justifies the establishment’s loyal following.
In the end, the food far outshone the atmosphere. For those who value ambiance, be prepared for loud music and bar energy. But for the sandwich alone, it’s worth a call-in order. I would return for that sandwich any day—just not for...
