Enormous portions are the norm here. Their pad thai was one of the better versions I've had. Great fire to sweet ratio. Basil fried rice was good and flavorful, but I'm not a fan of canned baby corn and there was a lot of it. Fresh rolls were nearly as good as my favorite LA spot, just lacking a little zing from fresh herbs. I'm not a fan of fatty peanut sauce as a dip for these fresh appetizers; they pair much better with a light, sweet, vinegar-based chili sauce, which was sadly not available. Prik king was a mild disappointment. Primarily a fiery green bean dish with red curry, this version was littered with too many other things -- mushrooms, those baby corns (again), snow peas, and peppers.
We're vegetarians and ordered most of the dishes with tofu. The pieces are far, far too large. They barely fit in ones mouth and because they're simply stir fried, lacking in flavor. We pushed aside more than half of the tofu--too big, too much.
Lastly, I pay a lot of attention to garnishes and sauces at Thai restaurants. The spicy fish sauce (vinegar based with Thai chilis) was very good. Pungent and indeed, quite spicy. The red chili sauce tasted like the stuff from a jar.
One gripe: we ordered to go and when I asked for a two additional fish sauces, I was informed I would have to pay for the additional sauces. Really? These were the very small plastic containers that look like a large thimble. We had ordered enough food for four people and I pointed this out to the cashier. How are four people supposed to share a tiny container? Furthermore, those who eat in are welcome to put as much fish sauce as they liked onto their food. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's frustrating to shell out nearly $50 and be rationed to a tiny, single serving of our...
Read moreDang's is relatively pricey - the Lake Oswego effect, I guess - but the place is clean, functional and tastefully decorated in the inside And, yes, the food is pretty good on the whole.
They have a huge menu with a plethora of house specials. The standard Thai fare, like red, green, yellow and musseman curries, tom kha, and pad thai are all very good. The Penang curry is well worth a try. It's very fresh and sublimely tasty. You'd be advised to ask for a bowl since this dish is more like soup (as it should be) but all you get is a plate and fork! Oh, and the portions are massive, so expect to take some food home with you too.
There's lots of drinks to choose from and they have a great selection of green teas. Try the green tea with toasted brown rice.
This place gets busy at dinner but the service is good and efficient. If you decide to eat mid afternoon, though, when things are quiet, the service tends to slack off somewhat. On the whole,...
Read moreI hadn't been to this restaurant since before the pandemic. I was eagerly looking forward to lunch with my daughter there. Lunch cutoff time is 2:30 pm. We arrived at 2:00pm, and the hostess was reluctant to seat us. The 1st entree was delivered to our table at around 2:15, but it took around another 5 minute for the salmon with Panang sauce. I had asked for it mild, but it was extremely spicy.. too late for a do over. Less than 5 minutes later at around 2:23pm, a guy comes out with a box, telling us we can't continue eating our meal at the restaurant because of the 2:30pm lunch cutoff. One of our entrees came out late. Not our fault. We boxed the fóod not on our plate, but I ate what was on my plate despite staff protestations. I doubt I will be back anytime soon. I left with indigeston, and I felt very...
