This restaurant used to be very good, however today I went there with my family and my son got sick in their bathroom from the red snapper dinner, my food (Chile Renllos) was so cold the cheese was still a block of unmelted cheese, I had it sent back to get heated and I didn't get the heated food back for 15 mins ( by this time everyone's halfway through their meal) then when I got it back, the food was overheated and the rice was hard burnt and stuck together. The shrimp cocktail tasted like ketchup and water, terrible!! I could go on and on because there were 7 of us but I don't have that kind of time, but that brings me to the next issue they automatically put a 15% gratuity tip on our bill that I had no idea about and I added even more money to the bill, i found this out on my way home while looking at the receipt. Once I realized this I called and spoke with the manager Chris, who informed me that because we were a party of 6 or more people the gratuity tip automatically gets put in, I asked him to refund the 15% gratuity tip and told him he could keep the additional $10 tip i added, he refused to do that, he said by law in Chicago they have the right to do this... I was not satisfied with the food or the service there so why should I pay $30 in a tip on a $122 bill, I think it would be fair to give a $10 tip after all we didn't ask for anything to be comped on our bill (otherwise everything would have been comped on the bill because nothing was anything to write home about) and he refused to do that he said I can come in and use the extra $10 tip money I added when I am there for my next visit there. I explained that I don't live in the area I live in Wisconsin I'm here visiting my mom and took her out to dinner, the manager Chris still refused to return the 15% gratuity to my credit card however he was willing to credit the extra $10 that I added to the bill I finally settled with that because I figured I wasn't going to get anywhere with him and he asked for my credit card information over the phone so he could return the $10 to me after I gave him all the credit card information he said "once I am done with all my work i will take care of this for you" so that doesn't make me feel any better either!! He just had me give him my credit card information over the phone and wrote it all down, so now my information is sitting there in the restaurant and who knows if it's secure!! Totally not happy at all with this restaurant...

The last 3 times I was there I had terrible experiences. One of the times my wife and I had lunch there, everything was great till the had a rush of white people and the waitress never came back to out table, we would call her and she ignore us. I consider myself a good tipper, I give 30 percent all the time so I felt like she wanted to cater to them, the second time I was there I was eating a red snapper. Not even a quarter eaten when I felt something by my lip, it was a hair and I pulled it out, I felt it coming up my esophagus. I told the weitress and she asked me if I wanted another one. When I got the bill she charged me for two. I questioned her and she told me, well u order two of them. I paid for two. Believe me there was no tip that day, I was paying for about 8 people that day. The third time, we all ordered and my food never came. I asked her a couple time and it was almost done every time. Finally we got the bill and I never got my food. I think these people here cater to the white folks and dont care about their own kind. I never had an issue at any other Coculas but this one. So now that I have a group of 10 that are wanting to go have food and drinks there, I have to pass cause I dont want to be humiliated again. They cant really be that bad if its always packed. But for me it will...

My Husband and I visited Cocula's for our 10th year anniversary (our first date was at this location). It was a Saturday evening about 8pm and the place was busy. We waited in our car for a table for about 40 minutes, but it wasn't a big deal because we saw friends in the parking lot and it allowed us to catch up. They called our cell phone to let us know a table was available. The restaurant was pretty packed but our waiter (I belive his name was Isaac) was on it. He gave us a heads up that a party of 15 had walked in before us, so he advised us to order quickly so our order went in before theirs, so that was awesome. We went with the parrillada for two, which comes with carne al pastor, chicken, beef short ribs, chorizo, and shrimp with bell peppers, onions, jalapeños, tortillas, and a side of rice and beans. We also ordered two Micheladas. The food was more than enough (could easily feed 3 people), and the Micheladas hit the spot. Have I already mentioned that our server was on top of it? He was GREAT and made sure our waters were topped off, and that we had enough salsa throughout our dinner. TIP: for those who haven't ordered a parrillada before, make sure to use the tongs provided to move the meat around so it...

El Cocula has kinda become the spot I come to for special occasions. It’s always the same, nice and quiet, that Mexican hacienda vibe, and sometimes the live mariachi walking around the tables just makes it feel even better. I went with the bistec a la mexicana… oh man, I haven’t had that in a really long time. Skirt steak simmered in a mild tomato sauce, with the bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes. The steak itself was juicy and tender, not tough at all, and it soaked up the sauce so every bite had that mix of smoky meat and the slight sweetness from the tomato. The peppers still had a little bite to them, not mushy, which I liked. The rice was fluffy and the beans were creamy and smooth, just the kind that makes the plate feel complete. Honestly, I need to start coming here more often. Between the food, the vibe, and the friendly staff, it always feels like a good choice.
