We got dinner here last night (10/21/18) because our regular place Slab BBQ was closed. We ordered for pickup and I was ready to turn around and walk out when we got there. I can see how you might think this is good bbq if you've never really had good bbq before. The place looked unsanitary, the food in the trays was very oily. They kept stirring the fried rice a few times while we stood there, possibly to keep it looking fresh??
We didn't find out it was cash only until we got there. So while I waited for my husband to find an ATM, I asked a couple people if they'd eaten here before. They said the place had nice cajun food. At a glance, this looked like a place that was being operated by the Chinese food place next to it. Maybe some of that food came from there, or they share a kitchen?? If you're going to expand your culinary offerings to food that is not native to you, please make it as good as or better than the originators of that cuisine.
They also messed my order and put sauce on the bbq instead of on the side - there was almost 1/3 a cup of cheap tasting sauce on the meat. I had to wipe every piece of rib tip before I sat down to eat. The lady answering order calls couldn't be understood, and my husband didn't find out he had ordered fried chicken wings until we got home. I usually don't add condiments to my food because good food will always taste good by itself. Also, if I try food at a new place, I want to know how good they are so I limit or use no condiments.
I have never walked into a bbq place where I couldn't smell the bbq standing inside the premises. I couldn't smell it in the car either. When we got home, my puppy's nose that is usually following the bag of food paid no attention to the bbq.
In a word: disgusting. I'm going to have to eat a bunch of good Chicago BBQ in order to forget...
Read moreSo yes there is a lot of panhandling that happens here however this is also smack dab in the middle of one of the poorest neighborhoods in the entire city so... I don't know why someone would leave a one star negative review when it's obvious where in the city this is... come on... chill out. If you can't take it being asked for change, go somewhere else.
Regardless of the panhandling, I consider this place one of Chicago's Best unknown culinary treasures. It's essentially a fusion of Cajun and Chinese Food. Its great! They use only leg meat for the chicken which is extra tasty!!
I get the blackened chicken paired with the spicy cajun fried rice. Its the BEST.
I will say of the panhandlers that do frequently hang around there, if you talk to them with respect they'll talk to you with respect even if you don't have...
