I try to get at least one crepe from each city I visit. I was so excited to try this place based on the reviews. When we arrived the person who sat us seemed annoyed and tired, which was totally understandable because I think they were the only ones waiting tables and serving people as far as I could tell; the place was pretty busy, especially for only one person waiting tables. Anywho, we ordered two crepes and they came out fairly quickly, which was great. I got the crepes Suzette and my partner got the caramel and salted butter crepe. His was swimming in sauce, he ate maybe half of it because it was just too much sauce. The sauce on mine was more proportional but I hate to say it, it was the worst crepe I’ve ever had, he echoed this sentiment with his crepe. It was hard and difficult to cut through, like it was over cooked or something? I’ve never had to use a knife to cut through a crepe. Once we tasted our crepes, they were both chewy, which is something I have never experienced with crepes. It almost seemed as though the crepes are (over)cooked in bulk, instead of fresh when ordered and just quickly reheated when ordered. It was just so strange and so disappointing. These are not cheap crepes either ($33 (!) dollars for just 2 crepes after tax and tip), which we were both more than willing to pay but the quality did not match the price at all. When we were leaving we saw the kitchen had a huge stack of crepes that they would grab from, so I think my inclination is correct about cooking in bulk. I personally have always had crepes made to order at crepe stands and crepe shops, so I don’t know if that is what is causing the tough, chewiness. Anyways, I hope it was just an off night, but based on the previous reviews that I missed when choosing this place, it seems that this is...
Read moreThe chef at La Crêperie is a phenomenal artist 🤯. Truly. The waitress (at least the one there when I came over) was charming, kind, helpful, and made us smile several times just by her beautiful approach (and awesome fashion style 😉). And the atmosphere is fun and transporting. Such suitable music and such a feeling of history on the walls.
After eating there seven years ago and having an experience of transcending flavors, I finally had a chance to visit Chicago again and of course I couldn't miss the opportunity to have another date in La Crêperie. And let me tell you — the memories did not lie!
Our order was the same Mango Chutney dish (Poulet au curry), plus the Poulet et fromage de chèvre, and the flavor in these goosebump-inducing dishes is just as much a perfection as it was seven years ago. It seems this place has one main policy: “Don't mess with perfection”. It was all so delicious, that despite being absolutely full, I could not avoid the urge to order a Suzette á la Germain for dessert, which they kindly served cut in two halves, each on their own plate 😋. And it's like I grew another stomach just for this yummy dessert. Magnifique!
Only two more words can describe these dishes: Art. Magnificent Art 👏
P.S. I swear this is not to try and sound pretentious. This is simply my honest opinion. I won't get to eat there again for a long time, as I am from abroad. But now I know: This memory does not lie. Thank you, La Crêperie; for a wonderful experience 🙏
The lighting and wall-colors were rouge, and my phone camera simply isn't good enough to catch the dishes at their actual glory, so there's a deep red tint in the pictures I'm uploading, but trust me when I say: the dishes are beautiful, and the flavors are undescribably...
Read moreThis was one of the most disappointing meals I've ever had in Chicago. My group came here because of the rave reviews, but now I'm wondering if those reviewers have ever gone to a decent restaurant.
Let's start with the good - the atmosphere is really nice. We managed to snag outdoor seats with trees, pretty flower planters, and french music tinkling from the speakers. It would make a nice family meal or date night.
Now the bad - I understand this could be an off night for this place. But on the Sunday evening that we went, this restaurant was definitely understaffed. There were only 2 servers in the entire restaurant. And probably similarly understaffed in the kitchen. We didn't receive our food until over an hour after we ordered. And the food itself was... Not good. My mushroom and chicken crepe was so incredibly salty, it was almost inedible. The crepe, like some reviewers have noted, was overcooked and tough. The bread that came with the escargot was pretty stale, which in and of itself, is embarrassing for a French restaurant. We didn't have our water refilled until after we were getting up to leave. It was just a mess of a dining experience that left us feeling like we should've gone somewhere, anywhere else in the...
