This is solely based on the food and to be quite honest, it is quite upsetting to have to give this review.
Boat noodles and yen ta fo were both way, way too sweet. Is this for the American pallette? Why aren't we allowed to ask for the food how we want it with some sauces and peppers like normally would happen? Shouldn't that be standard since this restaurant is supposed to serve authentic Thai cuisine?
Som tum was the same way. We asked for it more sour as that is how my mom likes it and we were told if the flavors are changed it won't taste right... Well, when you go to Thailand or lots of other Thai places you can specify how spicy, sour, sweet your papaya salad is. I'm thinking they may not have Thai natives cooking in the back and whoever is cooking just tosses a premade lime, sugar, etc. mixture over the papaya before serving.
Lard Nar was also really sweet. I guarantee that the taste is not authentic at all.
What happened to this restaurant? I guess we will not be going here anymore. You would think that if you order in Thai and ask for things a certain way that you would be properly served. The food is not good for Thai tastes. Not authentic and...
Read moreProbably one of the most complete authentic Thai restaurant in Chicago. Simply browsing the menu brought back memories of Northern and traditional Thai cuisines like Thai sausage, khao man gai (hainese chicken), and Khao tom mud (sticky rice in banana leaves). This is my first time seeing so many traditional dishes outside of Thailand. Together with my friend, we ordered the duck curry and pork belly stir-fried with holy basil, as well as a generous portion of som tum (papaya salad). Their som tum is definitely on-par if not better than some that I had in Thailand. The crispy strings of green papaya paired really well with the juice from fish sauce, lime, and tomato. Because my friend couldn't eat too spicy, they kindly toned down both the curry and pork belly. Still, they were very flavorful. For dessert, we had to go with the sticky rice in banana leaves - a really local dessert that's famous all over Thailand. All in all, a really authentic cuisine that I must...

Pretty disappointed given that this place is featured in magazines and has 4+ stars on Google (read the Yelp reviews because they are more accurate). You probably won't need a reservation (it was not busy on the Friday night I went and my reserved table wasn't too special). I am guessing that is linked to the "changes" they have made in the past year (that is what long-time customers are saying and I wish that I had listened).
The food was subpar given this is "authentic thai". Chef Ramsey says to never trust a kitchen with a big menu...well, this is a BIG menu. Jungle curry was not spicy (stingy on the chicken, was not flavorful); Thai Basil Duck was mostly fat and COOOOVERED in soy sauce (also pretty small portion). Service was average. Ambiance was smooth jazz with the ball game on with Thailand action film posters?...
