I gave 5 stars across the board. Here is how that works.... It's a German bakery. I'm not German, but my two friends that brought me there 4 lunch are German. Very German. So very excited about this place. So 1st the food. The special was sausage and potato salad. With half of a buttered roll. Very delicious. The serving size was perfect, since u were left with room for dessert. And didn't have 2 fuss with leftover doggy bags. The desserts are over the top fancy. My girlfriend bought a slice of this chocolate cake that everyone there was drooling over. To go. So for only $8.00, she was set up for late night movie and cake! Next was service. It did seem very personalized. Even though there were only a few people working the front, they took ample time with each and every customer. There is no self seating, and u pay first, while u order, at the front register. Very cozy setup, u can make friends with everyone in line, enjoying all the beautiful pastries in the display case. All the little German ladies r there 2 purchase a little taste of many different desserts, and time is taken 2 gently and carefully slice and package these selections for the many admirers shopping. So what u buy is freshly sliced at the time of purchase. Nice. Next is atmosphere. Charming and familiar. Almost like being at a very loved, distant relatives for a special occasion. We were even blessed with the appearance of the cutest tiny dogs I have ever seen! Gems and glitter on their halters and leashes. Which were worn only to accessories, since their human parents carried them with loyalty. Well there u have it. Oh, the parking lot is small. And the place is popular. But when we parked, there were maybe 2 or 3 spaces free. So it's always fun when I get the last, or almost last parking spot. Very satisfying. Just like this little...

Hess German Bakery in Lakewood is a delightful gem that transports visitors straight to the heart of Germany with its authentic flavors and warm atmosphere. From the moment you step inside, the inviting aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries envelops you, creating an instant sense of comfort.

The bakery’s wide selection of goodies is nothing short of impressive. The pretzels are perfectly golden and soft, chewy in all the right places, and the variety of breads—from crusty sourdough to rich rye—showcase traditional German baking techniques. The pastries, especially the Black Forest cake and strudels, are crafted with care, offering a harmonious balance of flavors that are both rich and satisfying.

The staff at Hess German Bakery are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always eager to recommend their favorites and share the story behind each treat. The cozy seating area is perfect for enjoying a cup of freshly brewed coffee alongside your pastry, making it a lovely spot to relax and soak in the ambiance.

Whether you're a local or just passing through, Hess German Bakery is a must-visit. It's not just a bakery; it's a celebration of German culinary tradition that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor. Each bite is a testament to the passion and dedication of the bakers, making it a true haven for anyone who appreciates quality...

Wow wow wow. So excited to find the German deli around the corner from my construction project. This place is traditional and authentic. The ladies behind the counter all could speak fluent German the day I went. (Today, aug 5)

The deli has a wide range of German classic cured meats, and cheese. Along with packages of sausages, wursts, head-cheeses and other bravarian prussian delights.

Traditional pretzel rolls are the only bread option I got for the sandwiches. They were amazing. The sandwiches come loaded with your choice of meats and cheese. They are $5.95 each and one is more filling than a 6” fast food subway style sandwich. The traditional way to get these is with your meats, cheese, mustard and butter. So so good. The woman helped me order and gave me a spicy salami with dill havarti. Really incredible.

There are many different butters, krauts, herring, and German candies to choose from throughout the deli’s aisles. Also spaetzle noodles and powdered sauces do you can make your own traditional German dishes at home. Such a great store. Really good prices for imported good.

Also the staff all seemed super friendly knowledgeable and helpful.

I only poked my head into the bakery next door but that looked amazing as well. Several different streusels and many other goodies you would see at a bakery in Berlin...

Found this little gem on the recommendation of a friend and I’m glad I went. The selection of German items in the grocery spanned everything from soups and sauces to mustard to beer. If you want it, they’ve got it. The star of the show, in my opinion, is the fresh baked bread. The oven came from Germany and use a steam baking style which gives the bread a sort of moist texture. It’s really fresh. I wasn’t sure what types of salami to try, so I asked Connie for some samples. Of the three I tried I liked the zesty salami :) The staff is friendly and willing to help, in both German and English! Ask for samples. Buy some bread. Support local small businesses. We kept the bread in an airtight container for two days and it was still fresh. Otherwise, freeze and thaw.

Just like Germany! Don't miss out on this gem! You can even practice your language skills here, because the staff speaks German. We had fresh sandwiches made at the meat/cheese counter, bought a couple of drinks and ate utilizing the little bistro tables inside! I haven't had Fleischsalat in a long time and was thrilled to find it here. The Teewurst, Kartoffelsalat and Leberkäse were awesome as well! Afterwards we spent a bunch of money on German snacks to take home and then went across the hallway to have some Bienenstich and Granatsplitter. Score! Go check out out!

I have been coming here for years and generations in my family have as well! Fresh baked bread nothing is better than that! My favorite thing is to go to the deli and get a sandwich. They make them super simple butter mustard with options for fresh sliced meats and cheeses no toppings. Dont let thats stop you for less then $7 you can have a homemade sandwich! Service gets a point less cause its not the most welcoming group of employees.
