"Style Over Substance"

So, I recently visited this new local spot in Laredo, Texas, and let me just say—the décor really makes a statement! A loud, tacky statement. Clearly, someone poured their heart and soul (and budget) into the ambiance, so naturally, I thought, “Well, if they invested this much in the aesthetics, the food must be a culinary masterpiece!” Right? Spoiler alert: No.

Let’s start with the cocktail. I ordered a cántaro (basically a jazzed-up tequila highball). While the presentation was unique, at $15 a pop, I expected something more than just “meh.”

Now, onto the service. Our server was friendly, upbeat, and very apologetic for the delays. Meanwhile, the owner? He spent his time awkwardly pacing around, eyeballing guests like we were on display, without bothering to greet anyone. An introduction or at least a “How’s everything?” would’ve been nice.

For appetizers, we tried the server’s recommendation: crispy asparagus and fried oysters. The asparagus? Five sad sticks of tasteless, crispy-fried beer batter. At $14, it was shockingly underwhelming. As for the oysters—four regular-sized, breaded bites with dipping sauce for $18. Basically, overpriced bar food.

After that underwhelming and overpriced appetizer experience, we decided to cut our losses and skip dinner. Needless to say, the expectations I had based on the flashy decor were absolutely crushed.

Would I return? Well, unless I’m in the mood for paying gourmet prices for basic bites,...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Colmena Bar & Grill Restaurant for lunch, and I must say it was an outstanding experience. The food was absolutely amazing, with a diverse menu that catered to various tastes and dietary preferences.

My experience at Colmena was utterly disappointing. My order was a salmon and It took an excruciating two and a half hours for my order to even be acknowledged, let alone made. When I finally brought this issue to the manager's attention, she nonchalantly replied that she was "working on it", all the while conveniently caught in the act of indulging in her own meal before coming to our table. Despite there being only 13 customers in the restaurant when I arrived, the service was nothing short of a disaster. Three hours of my life were wasted sitting and waiting for food that never seemed to materialize. I would strongly advise against anyone seeking a pleasant dining experience to steer clear of this establishment as their food never seems to make it to the table. Unfortunately, I only drank water...
