A fantastic experience. A sitting where you experience the finest Japanese food you will find in the Midwest I bet. A lovely atmosphere, clean setting and a quiet enough experience where you can talk to your friends, family or a date at a normal talking level. I ordered one of the sushi platters, sadly I cannot remember the exact name but it had a selection of Nigri (fish or other food on 2 fingers worth of rice). It started with a wonderful mild yet flavorful selection to the richest of mackerel bursting with the flavor of fish oils and the sea. Also including sea bass, red snapper and another with from what I can tell is topped with fried garlic and scallions. Absolutely wonderful. I also was Reccomend a cut of the tuna belly from the Waiter. After hearing that I could not resist the temptation. I was in awe of the flavors and experience I had there. The best fish I've ever had in my life living in Kansas.
Now for the adventurous eaters here I highly recommend trying the single order of quail egg and the salmon roe. Both will be a experience you have never had before this.
I would also like to say the waiter was the most charming and pleasant man I've had greet me at a dinner table and help guide me through my meal. I sadly didn't catch his name but he spoke with a soft accent and wore diamond earrings and a necklace of silver from what I could tell. If you happen to have him you are taken care of and in great hands.
Lastly I would like to finish this review in drinks and cocktails. I ordered thier jack and ginger which was a pleasant mixture of charred bourbon with a refreshing ginger cider. A great way to start the evening. At the end of my drink I ordered a neat pour of Hakushu. Reminded me of a peaty brine scotch of islay with high sweet notes. Absolutely wonderful for a islay lover like myself. I will say for the whisky enthusiast if you are looking for Japanese whisky this place has you covered. And if your new to Japanese whisky Hibiki (apologies if not spealt right) harmony is the best all around whisky to have if you have not had it before.
To sum this up. I will be coming back many times and see this as the cumulative Japanese cuisine experience to seek when In Kansas or west Missouri. Maybe the whole Midwest. And I would like to thank the restaurant for the service they provide and cannot wait to have more mackerel and...
Read moreThis place had a nice atmosphere, and the waiter was thoughtful in giving space without any sense of rush, even though I arrived one hour before closing. There were three elevated private rooms, which gave the place a unique look. There were also two large-screen TVs, one of which was showing sports. The kitchen seemed to be open to the seating area, and it was quite loud.
One of the ordered dishes was nabeyaki udon, which was presented nicely, with the waiter thoughtfully placing the hot pot to ensure I wouldn't accidentally hurt myself. Their paper napkins added to the presentation, as they had the store's name printed at the base, making it look professional and put together. Cooked spinach, I believe, covered the surface of the broth and had an interesting texture that is not usually found in traditional udon bowls. The shrimp tempura was quite soggy from the start and seemed to rapidly absorb the broth, making it droop significantly by the time it arrived at the table. The broth had a sweet tint to its flavor, which is not typical in udon broths, but it was less pronounced than what you find at many Asian restaurants that cater to American tastes.
Unfortunately, the food left me feeling slightly indigested after the meal, and my stomach felt tight for the rest of the evening. This may have been partly due to the overuse of MSG instead of true dashi broth in the nabeyaki udon. Additionally, the meal felt a bit pricey for the type of food served (for example, nabeyaki udon was around $17 when it should have been $10-13). Dashi broth is the foundation of Japanese cuisine; that is one of the reasons why, despite the good presentation, I cannot consider the quality served here to be authentic...
Read moreLet me 1st start by saying I've scurried in here after a long day of shopping for Christmas looking for a decent light lunch upon arriving I was greeted by a vibrat, kind young man he was friendly and sat me right away. A waiter came to the table, and this is where my real issue begins. There was a game on the TV, a soccer game. I observed him and the chefs watching the game while partially doing their job while the waiter is at my table he's watching the game, he has a twitch which I understand but coupled with the fact that he was not even listening while I asked I questions. This meant no eye contact and no real attention to my needs as a guest. He takes my order, and I wait. I get my Miso soup it good though the bowl and spoon are chipped. More guest arrive, and the same waiter greets them with a smile and a small conversation more that I ever got. He brings my food walks off to watch the game I find chicken Katsu dry and flavorless I'm thank for the sauce but the rice is chewy. I eat what I can but I dont enjoy anything but the soup I don't want to pull any card but I'll say I would have liked equal service like I saw being given to others and this is a sushi restraunt not a sports bar turn off the game. Better service would have made up for the not great food. Needless to say, I...
