I am visiting NC from Virginia, so I decided to swing into the Applebee's near my hotel tonight to get 1/2-price from-9pm-to-closing appetizers. Once seated, with the menu opened to the appetizers, I asked the server, Kevin, to confirm that they did actually have 1/2-price appetizers at this location. He replied "yes," and was aware that I believed I was ordering 1/2-price items. I ordered the Classic Combo (regularly $13.29) and the Beef Nachos (regularly $9.99). The bill after my drink & tax should have come to $15.08 ($11.64 food + $2.49 drink + $0.95 tax) after the 1/2-price discount.
When the check came, there was no discount. I called Kevin back, pointing out the discrepancy, and he took the check back to correct it. He came back shortly with an apologetic explanation that he hadn't realized it was only a limited number of appetizers that were 1//2-price. He'd talked to the manager, and relayed that "this is the best he said he could do" as he pointed to a $5.00 discount. The server did offer to cover the difference if that wasn't "good enough."
At the time, I didn't think the server should have to suffer financially for management's poor training, so I paid the "discounted" bill of $22.17...a whopping $7.09 more than I'd been anticipating. I asked to speak with the manager, Dan, to let him know how disappointed I was at how the situation was handled. He informed me that the server told him I was only concerned with the cost of the Beef Nachos or he would have discounted the other appetizer as well. There was no offer to refund the difference. No offer of a discount for my next visit.
I feel cheated by both the server and the management. Since the server knew I was questioning both items, he should have addressed that with the manager. The manager could have offered some other solutions to make up for his employee's apparent lack of training in menu items.
I seldom leave poor reviews, but this hit my daily food budget hard...that is much different than a minor issue with service or taste. I will certainly never visit this location again, and I will not recommend it to others. My business and money will go to an establishment whose management is willing to do what's right when their wait staff gives mis-information. The food itself was prepared well, tasted good and had a nice presentation. My server was attentive to my needs while I was eating and kept my drink glass full. We have been coming to this establishment for years but after this evening we will no longer be bringing our business here and we will be letting others know of how this business treats Veterans and their families. It all started after my wife and I were seated. Within about two minutes of us being seated our server (Melissa D.) came to our table and out of no where says, what do you want? She didn’t introduce herself or say anything except what do you want? I pointed at my wife so that her order could be taken first and Melissa D. Says to me, why are you having her say her order first? I responded that my wife was a woman and it was the proper thing to do. Melissa D. became very confrontational and aggressive towards myself and my wife. She became very impatient and let it be known while my wife and I were deciding what we wanted to drink. After waiting an extremely long period of time for drinks to be brought to us Melissa D. finally returned with our drinks and asked for our orders. After our orders were taken Melissa D. left and returned roughly 46 minutes later and said to us that our order must not have been put in because she had not seen our order and she recommended that we pay for our drinks and we could go somewhere else or wait and see if our order ever goes through. My wife and I decided to just pay for the drinks we had and just leave. We took our business elsewhere for the evening. I have never experienced this level of disrespect and disregard while eating out at an establishment. What’s funny is there is a drink card on each table talking about how Applebees honors our nations hero’s (Veterans) and this is how I was treated. Not only am I a Veteran but a disabled Veteran who fought for this nation. I have already contacted the Applebees Corporate Office via email and I’m waiting to see how this is handled. I would not recommend to anyone this Applebees in Leland, NC. Floors were filthy and I noticed the wait line in the curbside pickup area was packed with unhappy looking customers who had been waiting an extremely long time for their orders. Read moreI went to Applebees in Leland, NC tonight for dinner and the same thing happened when I went a couple of weeks ago. It took FOREVER for us to get our food! Two weeks ago when my daughter and I went our waitress apologized several times and said they were short on help that day. The couple beside us were very aggravated they had to wait so long. But, I thought it was just the day that was the problem. But, tonight was even worst. My friend and I ordered salads and we sat for 50 minutes before we got our food. Our waitress apologized one time and said they had been really backed up in the kitchen, but they didn't even offer to bring us some chips or something. We saw a family of 5 come in after us, eat and leave and we still didn't have our salads. After about 30 minutes we asked another waitress about our food and she was nice enough to come back and let us know they were almost ready. I've never waited so long before. My salad was good, but my friend did not like hers. There was a young guy that came to our table with silverware before the food came and he said a little something about it should be out soon, but did not apologize. When my friend said "I'm just so hungry" He said, well, I know what you mean, I've been on my feet since this morning and haven't been able to sit down much at all... He was telling us his troubles and not say he was sorry for our wait. I'm not sure if he was the manager or not, but it was very disappointing to have to wait this long on salads.
