The food alone gets four stars but I’m going to leave two and one due to the service and the ambiance.
Before leaving the negative review I do want to shout out to Jeff, the server, for taking care of us after we complained to the hostess. His service was great and as I understand he was not our original server.
The wait was not bad for a Saturday morning and a party of 3. However, after we got seated by the hostess, we sat there for 15 minutes and no one even greeted us. I called the hostess and explained no one had even talked to us yet. Not long after we said something a server named Jeff came and took our drink and food order. He check up on us multiple times after he took over. While waiting for our food, but drinking our drinks. A server came by and said, “Hey folks I’m so sorry, I’ll be right with you!” It kind of caught us by surprise as Jeff had already taken care of us. She came back and tried to take our order at which we told her Jeff had already taken care of us. But my concern here was that this conversation with this server was 25 minutes AFTER we had sat down. Were we suppose to wait for 25 minutes to get service?
Now for the location of the table. We got seated at probably the worst location in the whole restaurant. It was our first time here at this diner but I’ll bet money there isn’t a more unpleasant location. A big dining table to the left of the of the entrance. This table is located against the glass and the seats are facing outside. Now right outside perpendicular to this table is another table for people to wait. This places you in this awkward situation where you are staring at the people outside while they stare at you.
The second point about this location of the table is that at 9 AM, the sun is beating on you hard. It’s just at an angle that when you’re facing outside you’re also staring straight at the sun. And since the entrance is right next to you the cold air of the room is not consistent as people are coming in and out. With our coffee and hot food, we started a light sweat. It was a very uncomfortable situation over all.
Suggestions for the restaurant: As a former server, I get that sometimes a server has a bad day and can get overwhelmed so I can assume that was just a one off. Especially with Jeff’s awesome service that cancelled the bad one.
I would place that dining table at another part of the restaurant and try one of those bar tables instead. Or at least something that doesn’t force you to have awkward staring contests with other folks. Also please put some kind of sun screen or window tint to protect from the sun. I would also move that waiting table on the outside away from eating customers...
Read moreTurned out to be true. The third time was a charm. Twice previously we eschewed the prospect of a 45+ minute queue to obtain a seat at this still popular restaurant.
Greeted with a feeling of deja vu, I noted that most of the inside wall decorations had made the trip from the original location on Bandera that had also housed the now defunct Cha Cha's and subsequently the Okie Dokie restaurants.
The restaurant has been open for a while now and still enjoys a sunami wave of sybaritic cuisine effusiveness that some may question the basis in reality. From having eaten there now the emphasis, judging from the piles of berry syrup covered waffles, saucy eggs bennie and icing striped pancake stacks at 2pm, breakfast is king here.
I succumbed to the peer pressure and ordered the bennies with perfect poached eggs but some slightly off tasting jalapeño hollandaise and a sour cream heavy shredded potato casserole that became a bit flavor overwhelming . My dining companions also pulled from the breakfast selections with toast, omelet, pancakes, eggs, bacon, except for one maverick desire for a burger. Big beefy bacon cheeseburger that would benefit from the addition of some seasoning.
In addition to the royal stature of breakfast foods, cash is king here. As far as credit cards are concerned, you will need to leave home without them. Budgeting for a meal here is simple. All items have a suggested price of $15 with $5 for drinks and desserts. So a couple can expect a typical bill of $40. With a 20% tip . . . $48.
I applaud the reason for the existence of this Cafe and might recommend it for that reason. The other reason would be relative to a robust selection of salads, sandwiches and breakfast items. As far as the price to satiety quotient I will refer you to your own continuum...
Read moreI was so excited about this place and had really high hopes. Sadly it was not. It takes a lot for me to be irritated. We get there at 12:30, check in and wait for 40 mins. Get seated and wait… the people next to us get seated and get there drink order in while we still wait. They get there drinks and we’re still waiting. After 15 mins a girl that was not our server gets our drinks. The server that was supposed to serve us just looks at us and walks away. Now we have been waiting for 25 more mins and our server just come and says I’ll take your food order in a few moments. We thought ok maybe he’s going to get another tables food and drop it off. Nope! He’s just walking around. At this point I just wanted to go because it’s my birthday and now my attitude is ruined. After waiting 30 mins he comes and takes our food order. I ordered the lone star breakfast which should be 3 eggs two meats potatoes and pancakes. I get my plate and I only have two eggs and waiting for my pancakes. I finish my food still waiting for my pancakes and the server comes by and asks how everything is and I tell him I’m still waiting for my pancakes. He says oh you ordered the special you don’t get pancakes. I told him I don’t recall ordering the special and he looks at me and say oh so you want your pancakes. 😑 On top of everything no manger came to check on us. There’s a lady with glasses that sat people way after us and they had there food way before us. The guy with glasses bald. He was doing most of the work while the other lady sat with some people and chatted up with some customers. My husband and kids liked their food that why I gave it 4 stars. BUT YALL NEED TO WORK ON...
