Working from just after lunch until nearly midnight, getting good meals into my free time is difficult at best. Partially for convenience, and partially to help traveling guests find restaurants that don't exist in their home territory, I've decided to start ordering once or twice a week from places that either I hadn't heard of, or that were exclusive to Lexington. So I stumbled upon Smashing Tomato. I ordered through GrubHub, and had a couple of special instructions (asking for a bit extra sauce, for example, as my job doesn't guarantee I'll have fifteen or twenty minutes uninterrupted to eat all at once, so I risk food sitting out and drying up). Ordered the artichoke dip and chicken gorgonzola on penne. The pricing was extremely reasonable- Something I can't often say after working in various restaurants for years- and my first real 'problem' was deciding on what to order. Everything sounded amazing (and I'm going to have to make this one of my choices next time my partner wants me to pick-three/'choose one on where to eat out...). Food was made promptly, far faster than I have come to expect throughout this slow-burn sampling, and arrived in hot, well-packaged, individually-marked containers, with everything I might have potentially needed to eat with included. If I had to pick out things I was NOT happy with (and trust me, even for trying I can only think of petty, absolutely inconsequential things), the best I can come up with are that I asked to have a little extra sauce on my gorgonzola... and between the way my free time does or doesn't happen, well. That's not ST's fault at all. The other 'issue' I had was that I have a pretty specific, and extremely difficult-to-accommodate food intolerance to a certain seasoning. Because I failed to make that known, and did not read the finer details on the pasta, I ended up taking a few bites of something I couldn't finish. It tasted AMAZING, but my own lack of attention-to-detail tortured me by forcing me to discard the dish that smelled so, so good, if only I had paid better attention and communicated more effectively with the restaurant. The order arrived promptly, was 'plated' beautifully and accessibly, and even though there was more than enough sitting-time between getting it and getting to eat it, nothing was soggy, greasy, congealed, or any of the other less-than-ideal textures that tend to accompany settled foods in closed containers.
I will definitely keep Smashing Tomato in mind in the future as having a unique menu that I want to get to...
Read moreCame on a Monday night around 6pm and there were quite a number of people for a Monday. You order and pay at the counter and your food is brought to you. We ordered the 12 inch margherita pizza with the original chopped salad which as a dinner special is only 11.95, great deal! And I also ordered the fig and bacon salad with chicken added. The salads were huge in size. A side of chicken was only a $1 so I should've known it would be a small portion size. I wish the counter guy would've let me know, for future visits Ill be sure to add more chicken. The fig salad was good, the dressing, a bacon homey mustard was way too strong on the mustard end. The margherita pizza was very good. I love thin, crispy pizza and this place delivered. The chopped salad was good and again for what I paid was huge. My only complaint us that the salad options are kind of limited. For advertising itself as a salad, pizza, and wine place having 4 salads to pick from is limited imo. We didn't get any alcohol but I saw 6 standard beers to pick from. On Thursday's they do $10 bottles of wine which is a good deal if the selection is decent. I'll definitely...
Read moreI’d give less than one star if I could. First and foremost, the manager that took our call was the most the most unprofessional individual I have ever experienced in a restaurant. We did ask for her name at the end of the experience and she refused to provide it and hung up the phone. We called the store after receiving an incomplete order that arrived over an hour late. The food was horrible, cold, and overpriced. The service was even worse. Initially, we were so tired from traveling we just wanted to get the drinks we paid for but did not receive. The manager claimed that it was “not our problem” because it was the delivery services issue. She then belittled us and invalidated our concerns. She also agreed to give a partial refund because of the missing items, which was never received. We had traveled to Lexington for a basketball tournament and had a room full of little kids who needed dinner. This was such a disappointment, and an inaccurate presentation of Kentucky hospitality. The manager should be fired. We will never order from...
