Simply looking at their super exciting menu, I don't know why I never made it to their original location! But I made up for that last night. My father and I jumped in, ordering quite a spread because we couldn't decide between all the options! Here are my thoughts on all we had....
Chips and Queso - duh. If it's on a menu, I'm gonna get it. Mostly because I can then dip everything and anything that I order into the queso. lol. The chips are huge - like, half a tortilla huge. Some are darker in color than other, which I took to mean they were actually freshly fried! They're not very salty and therefore provided a nice blank slate for the yummy queso. The queso had a small hint of spice, but wasn't hot - perfect for me!
Loaded Tots - My dad's choice. I always love tots! But unfortunately for me, the chipotle sauce was way too spicy for my pathetic taste buds.
Swipe Right Taco - honey lime chicken, sweet & spicy bacon, cheddar, salsa and sour cream. Yup. Solid taco. I loved the balance of sweet and hot that ran through all the flavors.
Godfather - fried chicken, tomato, sauce, Mac & cheese and a fried mozzarella stick. I have to say that I really wanted more of their awesome tomato sauce. It had tangy caramelized onions that provided this heavenly flavor! But there wasn't quite enough of it to lift the heaviness of all the noodles and breaded chicken.
Rima D - short rib, hash, mushrooms, Zaza sauce, fried mozzarella stick and fried onions. Definitely one of my favorites! the short rib was so tender and had great flavor. And the crispy onions really added something special. I would absolutely get this one again.
Sensei - kangaroo tenderloin, orange rum glaze, crispy rice noodles, lettuce, peanuts, peanut chili oil and green onion. This was the least interesting for me, personally. I can’t quite put my finger on the flavors....I just wasn’t into it.
Mac Daddy - pulled pork, corn pudding, bacon, maple butter and crispy onions. This was another big winner for me. Maybe even my favorite in terms on one big, crazy taco. I loved the sweetness of corn pudding layered with the salty bacon - so good!! I need to have this taco again!
Epic Taco - pork belly, apple slaw, pickled onion, rattle snack sauce. This was another favorite of mine. It was completely different from all the others because of its simplicity. But the flavors were there - the tang of the apple balanced perfectly with the salty, tender meat. I want to get this one again, too!
I can’t wait to visit this place again. It’s got such an awesome, funky and artistic decor. The music is a little loud (you hear more of the beat than any melody or lyrics), so be prepared for a fun night out!
Next time I need more Queso for sure. Then maybe try some different tacos? Alderman? Plain Jane?? All Nighter? I’m sure they’re...
Read moreCame in for some much needed time with the bestie and was not dissatisfied. An hour & a half wait on a Fri night was a little long, however, we spent half of that time waiting for drinks at the DORA window adjacent so as the old adage goes ... times flys when you're having fun!
The Drinks: We opted for a half gallon prickly pear margarita, to share of course, and it was hands down one of the BEST margaritas I've ever had. This libation definitely helped the wait time. $35 for a little over four solo cup sized drinks - WORTH THE COST in my opinion.
The Food: Chips with Guacamole & Queso - big hearty chips (slightly oily) did not come out hot, which would have explained the wait & oil, but they tasted good with the dips we chose. The guacamole and queso were decent would get them again.
The Big Thumper - this taco had peppercorn kangaroo, sticky rice, spicy chili & bbq jam, fried egg, and crispy carrots The bad: the meat could have been beef as the jam was a little overwhelming for the delicate sweetness of kangaroo. The carrots weren't crispy so didn't add much. The good: the egg yolk mixing with the rice was fantastic. Overall, this was a good taco & I'd eat it again.
The Bomb- carne asada, bourbon shrimp, the same jam, Mac n cheese, and whiskey onions The bad: the Mac n cheese was pasty and flavorless and if I had this again I would ask for no Mac. The onions didn't really add much. The good: the bourbon shrimp were a strong flavor in this taco and combined well with the jam, honestly all the other flavors got lost. The carne asada was tender and went well with the shrimp. I would order this again, minus the Mac.
The California Dreamer - pink peppercorn mahi mahi, pickled onions, street corn salad, avocado, chipotle sour cream, and cilantro The good & bad: this taco didn't really stand out for me. The most remarkable bit was the street corn salad which had great flavor. I'd give this a miss next time around.
The Crown Jewel- butter poached lobster (claws,) portabellas, truffle oil & shavings, Mac n cheese, shaved green onions The bad: you know it's coming .... the Mac - pasty & tasteless - did nothing to enhance this taco. It would do much better with more mushrooms. Also, I didn't get much truffle, but my bestie said it came through for her. The good: umm LoBSTER‽ It was well cooked and perfectly seasoned. Once we took off the Mac this taco was my favorite. More green onion and would order this again.
The atmosphere: Decent wait staff (our waitress was hit or miss) passing staff picked up the slack when they saw us sitting waiting for a chip refill or more water. The music was great and overall a fantastic vibe. The novelty of the taco selection was fun and I will absolutely...
